Question about Toshiba gigabeat S MP3 Player

S series, update or restore?


i have a s60 and it's telling me, what it seems to tell a few people, 'connect to a pc' - 'update or restore using pc application. read user manual'

what am i supposed to do? i don't want to fork out more money, i was just want to find this update and fix it

help me out please

    I had the same problem. It required a reinstallation of the firmware. I managed to find a copy on the web (Toshiba was no help) and when I installed it, everything came back (no files lost). Unfortunately, I've since had a hard drive crash on my computer so I don't have the file to send you but Google it and you'll eventually track one down.

I had the same problem. Reinstalling the firmware solved it but you can't get it from Toshiba (they were no help). I found a copy on the web but have since had a hard drive so I no longer have the file. Try a Google search for gigabeat firmware and you should track it down.

Error 1439 cant restore ipod keeps on popping. my ipod is a classic black.


  1. Disconnect and reconnect your iPod to iTunes, and then attempt to restore or update the iPod again.
  2. Restart your computer and then attempt to restore or update the iPod again.

I forgot the password to my ipod touch


There is only one way, you must restore the ipod which wipes out everything if you forgot it.

Updating and Restoring iPod touch Software
You can use iTunes to update or reinstall iPod touch software, restore default settings, and delete all data on iPod touch.
• If you update, the iPod touch software is updated. Your downloaded applications, settings, and data aren’t affected.
Note: In some cases, an update may also include restoring iPod touch.
• If you restore, the latest version of iPod touch software is reinstalled, settings are restored to their defaults, and data stored on iPod touch is deleted, including downloaded applications, songs, videos, contacts, photos, calendar information, and any other data. If you’ve backed up iPod touch with iTunes on your computer, you can restore data from the backup at the end of the restore process.
Deleted data is no longer accessible via the iPod touch user interface, but isn’t erased from your iPod touch. For information about erasing all content and settings, see “Resetting iPod touch” on page 122.
Update or restore iPod touch:

Ipod will not restore

Symptoms When restoring or updating an iPod in iTunes 7 or later, you may see a dialog reporting "An unknown error has occurred" followed by the error number 1415, 1417, 1418, 1428, 1429, 1430, 1436 or 1439.

Resolution If you are experiencing these errors, begin by updating to the latest version of iTunes. When you have the current version of iTunes, try the following:
  • Disconnect and reconnect your iPod and then attempt to restore.
  • Restart your computer and then attempt to restore your iPod.
  • Disable or Enable Disk Use on your iPod and then attempt to restore.
  • Try connecting your iPod to a different USB port and then attempt to restore.

Connect to PC and use device manager to repair


If you have a Philips HDD Series, it will not work with Windows Vista or Windows Media Player 11 except for briefly, then the player will stop working one day. Your only hope is to use it with Windows XP and Windows Media Player 10 - it is, basically, an obsolete player at this point in time.

The Philips Device Manager has a strange feature - it only properly updates your device if you have the newest version of the Device Manager:

Ipod won't sync with itunes on windows operating system


An iPod formatted to a mac will not sync with a PC. (I'm not sure why the rep told you it should) However an iPod that is formatted for a PC can be used with both the mac and PC hardware. The only difference you should notice when using with your mac is that it will load slightly slower, and it will not be able to be updated on the mac. To reformat it simply restore using itunes. If it will not show up in itunes at all then you will want to place the iPod into disc mode before connecting to the computer. Below I have posted a step by step on getting the iPod into disc mode as well as restoring just in case you need the information. :)
Having your antivirus active during an iTunes installation can in fact cause download errors though. If you do not have iTunes version 8.1.1.10 you will need to update your software before proceeding. If you are unsure on how to check, simply open iTunes and click on Help in the top toolbar. then select about iTunes. This will tell you what version you are running.
Putting ipod into disc mode http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1363 Toggle the Hold switch on and off. (Set it to Hold, then turn it off again.) Press and hold the Menu and Select buttons for at least 6 seconds until the Apple logo appears. When the Apple logo appears, release the Menu and Select buttons and immediately press and hold the Select and the Play/Pause buttons until the Disk Mode screen appears.
Connect the iPod to your computer; the screen on the iPod will change and say "Do not disconnect" If you are having difficulty putting the iPod model into disk mode, set it on a flat surface. Make sure that the finger pressing the Select button is not touching the Click Wheel. Also make sure that you are pressing the Play/Pause button toward the outside of the Click Wheel and not near the center.
If you are still unable to put your iPod with a Click Wheel into Disk Mode, use one finger from one hand to press the Select button, and one finger from the other hand to press the Play/Pause button.

After a few moments, your iPod will appear in the Source panel in iTunes.
Select your iPod in the Source panel and you will see information about your iPod appear in the Summary tab of the main iTunes windows.

Click the Restore button. You will be prompted with one or more restore options that may prompt iTunes to automatically download the latest iPod Software.

The 4 possible restore options are: Restore Option

1: Restore - Restores with same iPod Software version already on iPod. Restore Option

2: Use Same Version - Restores with same iPod Software version already on iPod even though a newer version is available. Restore Option

3: Use Newest Version - Restores with the latest iPod Software available. Restore Option

4: Restore and Update - Restores with the latest iPod Software available.

A progress bar will appear on the computer screen indicating that the first stage of the restore process has started.

When this stage is completed, iTunes will present one of two messages on screen with instructions specific to the iPod model you are restoring.
Restore Instruction 1: Disconnect iPod and connect it to iPod Power Adapter (typically applies to older iPod models).


Restore Instruction 2: Leave iPod connected to computer to complete restore (typically applies newer iPod models).

During the stage 2 of the restore process, the iPod will show an Apple logo as well as a progress bar at the bottom of the display. It is critical that the iPod remains connected to the computer or iPod Power adapter during this stage.

Note: The progress bar may be difficult to see since the backlight on the iPod display may be off.

After stage 2 of the restore process is complete and the iPod is connected to the computer, the iTunes Setup Assistant window will appear asking you to name your iPod and choose your syncing preferences similar to when you connected your iPod for the first time.

Apparently you have to restore the firmware. Download the zip file from http://www.aibohack.com/giga/repair_gigabeat.zip I found it on http://www.anythingbutipod.com/forum/showthread.php?t=19406 site.

Read the "read me" and follow the instructions. Got mine magically fixed!

There is only one way - and it will erase all your songs:

If you lock your iPod nano screen and can’t unlock it
Normally, if you can connect your iPod nano to the computer it is authorized to work
with, your iPod nano automatically unlocks. If the computer authorized to work with
your iPod nano is unavailable, you can connect iPod nano to another computer and
use iPod Updater to restore your iPod software. See the next section for more
information.
If you want to change the screen lock combination and you can’t remember the
current combination, you must restore the iPod software, and then set a new
combination.
Updating and Restoring iPod Software
You can use iPod Updater to update or restore your iPod software. Apple periodically
updates iPod software to improve performance or add features. It is recommended that
you update your iPod nano to use the latest software. You can also restore the software,
which puts iPod nano back in its original state.
â If you choose to update, the software is updated, but your settings and songs are not
affected.
â If you choose to restore, all data is erased from your iPod nano, including songs, files,
contacts, photos, calendar information, and any other data. All iPod nano settings are
restored to their original state.
To update or restore iPod nano with the latest software:
1 Go to www.apple.com/support/ipod and download the latest iPod Update. The update
has the latest software for all models of iPod.
2 Double-click the software installation file and follow the onscreen instructions to install
the iPod update.
3 Connect iPod nano to your computer and open iTunes. The iPod Updater application

If you’re using a Windows PC and the iPod Updater application doesn’t open

To Restore follow these instructions :

Note: Because Restore erases all of the songs and files on iPod, make sure to back up any files you've saved on the iPod disk. All of your songs, videos, podcasts, audiobooks, and games can be loaded back to your iPod provided that you have them stored in your iTunes Library.

I think you wont be able to do that.

How to restore your iPod:

For Windows:

1. Make sure you've reinstalled the latest version of iTunes.

2. Open iTunes, and then connect your iPod to your computer.

3. After a few moments, it will appear in the source list in iTunes. If the iPod's display doesn't show "Connected" or "Do not disconnect" you may need to put the iPod into disk mode to proceed.
