I have an older LG 50" plasma with only a DVI port. I have an DVI to HDMI adapter and it works on all my other hdmi equipment but the PS3 does not seem to connect this way. Anyone have any ideas? Does it need to be pure HDMI to HDMI? Is there some setting i can change on the PS3?

    Help. I can't afford a new TV!

Yes you can. It will not be like a HDMI cable but it will be better than the RCA. Your image will be in your HDTV (1920 × 1080). But you will have to buy a HDMI cable and and HDMI-DVI adaptor. You will not have sound so you will have to connect either your RCA or if you have a Digital Optical Audio sounds better.

If you have any questions just ask.

Good luck!

HOW DO I PLAY A DVD USING Hitachi Flat Panel Television 32HDL51 (ITS CONNECTED THROUGH HDMI CABLE)

Page 18 of the manual, you shouldn't need to do steps 2 or 3.

CONNECTING A COMPONENT SOURCE WITH HDMI or DVI CAPABILITY TO INPUT 1 or INPUT 2
1.Connect the HDMI or DVI to HDMI connection cable from the output of the HDTV set top box or DVD player to the HDMI input as shown on the AVC Center below.
2.With DVI output, connect the cable from the AUDIO OUT R of the HDTV set top box or DVD player to the INPUT (AUDIO/R) jack.
3.With DVI output, connect the cable from the AUDIO OUT L of the HDTV set top box or DVD player to the INPUT (AUDIO/L) jack.
4.Press the INPUTS button, then select INPUTS 1 or 2 to view the program from the HDTV set top box or DVD player. The VIDEO OSD label disappears automatically after approximately four seconds.
5.Select ANT A or B from the INPUTS menu to return to the previous channel.
NOTES:1. Completely insert the connection cord plugs when connecting to rear panel jacks. The picture and sound that is played back will be abnormal if the connection is loose.
2. The HDMI input on INPUT 1 or 2 contains the copy protection system called High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection (HDCP). HDCP is a cryptographic system that encrypts video signals when using HDMI connections to prevent ******* copying of video contents.
3.HDMI is not a "NETWORK" technology. It establishes a one-way point-to-point connection for delivery of uncompressed video to a display.
4.The connected digital output device controls the HDMI interface so proper set-up of device user settings determines final video appearance.

DVI to HDMI

HDMI and DVI use the same encoding scheme for video purposes- the only difference is HDMI can carry audio signals and therefore have different connectors- so it is not like the lack of a picture signal is because you are using two different cables (HDMI and DVI). In theory the DVI to HDMI adapter should work.
Is there a possibility that the adapter is defective? Any bent or missing pins?
How long are the cables? If they are of poor quality, a digital signal can be lost at 20 feet. Again, in theory.
The only other thing I can thing of, off the top of my head is to ask, did you change the input selection on your t.v.'s display screen to go from the input source that you get your t.v stations from... to the input source of the Play Station?

How do I connect my PS3 to my sanyo dp50747 in hdmi? I have everything hooked up correctly, but its not coming up on the TV. What do I do?????

If you see a no signal message, then it means that the signal output format of the PS3 does not match . It happens if you have previous used it on another tv and now connected it to a different tv. To resolve this, turn off the PS3 . Press and hold the power button on the PS3 till you hear three BEEPS. The PS3 should automatically detect the tv's resolution and the initial setup screen should appear. After that you should just follow on-screen instructions to set it up.

My sansung pn50a460s4dxza says it is 3d ready. how can i use this feature on my tv.

Your tv is a 2008 model, legacy 3d tv and requires a lot more than a current 3d HDTV does to view 3d. Today with a current 3d HDTV, Normally you only need a 3d source like a 3d Bluray movie and 3d glasses from Samsung and a HDMI cable connection from bluray player to HDTV. See below for your TV. You need a PC and IR emitter and Samsung 3d glasses plus user selected options on the tv.
Samsung 3-D Ready HDTV How do Samsung 3-D Ready HDTVs work?
Samsung 3-D Ready HDTVs are enabled by Digital Light Processing (DLP(R)) or Plasma Display Panel (PDP) engines that are capable of very fast refresh rates (120Hz). The inherent speed of these display technologies enables high quality stereoscopic 3-D by alternatively displaying left and right eye images. The display is synchronised with 3-D shutter glasses to provide the observer with a vivid perception of depth.
How do I connect my PC to a Samsung 3-D Ready HDTV?
The DVI output from the PC's graphics card must be connected to the TV's 3-D compatible HDMI port using a DVI-to-HDMI cable (or a HDMI cable plus a DVI to HDMI adaptor).
Alternatively, some newer graphics cards have a HDMI port instead of a DVI port. In this case, simply use a HDMI cable to connect the PC directly to the TV.
On all models, the 3-D compatible HDMI port is identified by the letters "DVI". (eg, "HDMI 3/DVI IN" or "HDMI 1/DVI IN")
What other equipment do I need to enjoy 3-D on my 3-D Ready HDTV?
  • Windows PC with DVI output
  • Compatible 3-D Shutter glasses and IR emitter with VESA compatible sync connector
How do I connect the IR emitter to the 3-D TV to support wireless 3-D shutter glasses?
The IR emitter should be connected to the "3D SYNC OUT" socket. The emitter should be placed on top of the TV with the LEDs facing towards the room. How do I turn the TV into 3-D mode?
Ensure that the TV source is set to "HDMI 3/DVI" (or "HDMI 1/DVI" for 720p models).
Plasma HDTVs Press the Tools button and select 3D Effect. Update from Off to Mode1.

Can't get the play station to work with the tv. The av is plugged in correctly and the ps is turned on. Don't know which channel to go to, and when EXT we tried all different inputs and it still doesn't...

Which generation playstation are you referring to The PS2 or PS3. The PS2 would be connected with a composite cable by default i.e red white and yellow cable. Connect the cable to the corresponding input on the TV, match color codes. Switch to correct input by using your remote controller. Press the AV button and a list of inputs come's up.Select av1 or av2 and check if you get a picture. If you use a ps3 then same as before press AV button on remote and select appropriate option on screen HDMI,Component or Composite.

How do i connect to an hdtv ?

You're going to need to connect a cable supported by BOTH the PC and HDTV. Check your HDTV's jack panel or manual. List the types of Input jacks it offers. The HDTV will likely have Component, Composite, DVI, HDMI and maybe even VGA jacks. Do the same for your PC. It likely has one or two Video Output jacks. Typical Video Outputs are DVI and VGA. The VGA type has been standard for years. It consists of a total 15 pins in 3 rows. The DVI has a number of pins, but most noticeable is a wide tab at one end of the jack.

If your HDTV has a jack that matches one of those found on the PC, you're in luck. Purchase a cable that will connect them - this would be either a VGA cable or and DVI cable. Nearly any inexpensive VGA or DVI (Digital Video Interface) cable 6 ft or less will do, but the better cables cost a bit more and when the distance is increased, the quality (or lack thereof) really becomes visible - especially on the lager HDTV screens.

If you want the sound to go to the TV speakers or elsewhere, you'll need to get a cable with a 3.5mm stereo plug (or whichever type your PC has - but that's the most common) to RCA or whatever the audio input jack type is that is associated with the video input you chose. The audio input must be the one associated with the video input - other wise you will not hear the audio on input 4 while watching input 3. The PC audio out is analog, so do try to put the signal into a digital input.

If you don't have a matching video input jack, you'll have to purchase an adapter or new video card with jacks that match your TV. Do not buy simple adapters that change VGA to DVI as they will not convert the actual analog VGA signals to Digital Video signals expected by the HDTV's DVI jack. The best bet is to buy a modern video card supported by your computer's mother board and OS that has a fair amount of memory (512 MB is a good start). If your HDTV has HDMI jacks and you wish to play the sound from the HDTV's speakers, get a card with HDMI output and buy an HDMI cable. It will send both the sound and video to the HDTV for you.

You can read a nearly endless list of articles about HTPCs aka "Home Theater Personal Computers" for ideas and deep discussions about everything from soup to nuts to implement, design and set up on google.

I hope this helps - good luck!

Powersurge made my HD setting revert to low def.

Your TV plays High Def material through either Input 4 (uses component cables R,G,B) or through Input 5 (Uses DVI cable).
Today most equipment uses HDMI cable for High Def or it may have a component (RGB) output that you can use. The DVI hookup is best, so you need a HDMI to DVI cable or Component Cables (Red, Green, Blue). You need some source that OUTPUTS High def (ex. 1080i) either through HDMI or component cable. You need to either connect the component cable(R,G,B) from the source to the Input 4 on the TV or connect the HDMI to DVI cable from the source to the Input 5.
You need to set the AV source on the TV to AV5 (if you are using the DVI input) or AV4 (if you are using component cables).
If you want to play Highdef source like Blue Ray then you can just connect the output of the blu ray player to your Tv using either the HDMI to DVI cable or component cable (Red, Green, Blue) and set the TV input to AV5 (for HDMI/DVI) or AV4 (for component).
But if you are trying to get Free High Def from an antenna then you will need to have a component that can OUTPUT high def. The $40 converter boxes don't do this - they simply convert the Digital signal to Analog (non high def). What you need is a High Def TUNER that OUTPUTS High Def. I was looking for one for this same reason and ordered the centronics ZAT 502 HD. But it cost about $80. Then I saw that Tivo had an upgrade deal where I could upgrade my existing Series 2 Tivo to Tivo HD for $99. It has a High Def Tuner in it. So I cancelled my order with Centronics and got the Tivo. In any case if you want Over the air HD you will need a High Def Tuner that will OUTPUT 1080.
