sometimes the laser moves all the way to the back of the dvd-rom drive and won't pick up the disc Once you get your case off the system, lift the dvd-rom out and remove the 4 screws on the bottom. if the laser is in range of the disc then you should take a cotton swab with a dab of alcohol on the end and clean the laser head ( never touch the laser) then put the dvd-rom together but leave the case off of the xBox. Test with a game, if it still does not read then you need to buy a laser from an online store I recommend eBay - there is a seller from Brooklyn New York that I buy all of my repair parts for, he has a eBay store by the name of YallStore. His shipping time is phenomenal! and The laser cost less than $10
Is your DVD-ROM the original one that was in it when it was purchased? If not, then there's your problem. If you replace it with another ROM from a different 360, or with an after-market 360 ROM, then it will only play movies and not the games. It requires you to hack your 360 to get the new ROM to work properly, and that's alot of stuff to do. I think that according to the rules of this website I'm not allowed to post info about how to hack & crack things. If your DVD-ROM is the original one, then maybe your need to update your firmware and even run a cleaning disc in your 360 to get it to work right. If that doesn't work, then you have the option of replacing your ROM yourself and finding the hacks to make it work right, or you can pay Microsoft about $100 to fix it for you.
you can take it apart (and void the waranty) and resolder the connection between the drive and the Xbox reader or just send it in to microsoft.... if you still have the waranty (which you probably do) then they will fix it for free
xboxes are my speciality, spent about 2-3 years repairing them.
you,ll have a dirty or worn laser unit.
thats why it won,t read disks.
