Hi,
I have problems in installing the wireless card in my new notebook...
it seems that after downgrading the OS from Vista to XP-Pro the
wireless card has not been recognized...
the model details:
Compaq Presario C700T CTO Notebook PC ...
PLEASE
help me by supplying the info on the model of the WIRELESS adapter/card
and the compatible DRIVER for this particular notebook...
I have DOWNGRADED to XP-pro system (the original OS was Vista Home)...
The problem is that I don't see any 'wireless' adapter in
:device manager>network adapter... the only device I see there is a
"Realtek RTL8139/810x Family Fast Ethernet NIC"... I tried with
different BroadCom and Intel PRO drivers... without any luck so far...
in some cases when I installed some WLAN drivers the system is
recognizing a new SM Bus Controller!
The OS originally
(preloaded) was Vista Hole Basic... and currently I have removed that
and installed XP-Pro SP2... the wireless was working fine in the
Vista... but now after Xp installation it is inactive...
The notebook has a wireless on/off button. when it is on it shows blue
light, when off shows amber/orange light. After I installed XP, I tried
to turn the switch ON, but it is not turning on (remained in
amber/orange state)... originally in Vista... I was able to turn it on
or off by pressing the button...
Now, in XP, when I press the button I get a message in HP wireless assistant that the Adapter is Disabled!
Here is the output from HWIDS:

The wireless is not going to turn on and off via the switch properly until we get the drivers loaded to make it work. There are 3 possible types of wireless card it could be, so we have to find out the exact model number of your system. On the bottom there should be a label that has a P/N or part number listed. what are those numbers. Here's an example of the label:
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c00033108&lc=en&cc=us&lang=en&os=2093&product=3632144&dlc=en
or
http://tinyurl.com/35dt4h
we need the info listed for #1, #2 and #3. Then we should be able to determine which adapter you have, and then we can (hopefully) find some Windows XP drivers for you.
I'm sorry to say that did not help to identify which card is installed in the system. Make sure the laptop is powered off and closed. Flip it over, and you'll see several covers that you can remove. Behind one of them is the wireless card - it will have at least one, and probably 2 wires connected to it. Read the model number and post that. It will be an Intel PRO/Wireless card, or an Atheros AR5007, or a Broadcom Wireless card. Once we know which one, we can then probably find the correct driver for it.
Thanks.
Assuming it is the Atheros chip as Derek believes, this should be the driver:

I have just been through this nightmare on a new C700t. The only wireless driver that would work for me was for the Atheros AR5006x chip and downloaded from a site in Czechoslavakia!
http://www.atheros.cz/download.php?atheros=AR5006X&system=1
I used the Version 5.3.0.56 which works just fine except that the blue/amber LEDs don't toggle as you turn the WiFi on and off. I guess I can live with that... (I read somewhere that this feature is a vendor supplied mod to the driver).

Friends,
Compaq Presario 700 PC Notebook's main problem is audio driver for win xp.
For Audio driver software you can visit a link by just Click Here .
For any other problems with this Notebook you can Click Here .
FYI- For any of you downgraging a Compaq Presario C700T CTO to Windows XP, this solved my audio driver problem. I can now control the volume settings and my headphones work correctly as well.

Use this for audio.Unzip to a folder.Run installer.if it errors use device Manager
From Device Manager, right click "Audio Device on HD",choose Update driver,
No to connect,
Install from a list or specific location,
Don't search I will choose the driver to install,
In the list of common hardware types, scroll down and select Sound, Video, and Game controllers.
Remove the check from "Show Compatible Hardware" and click on "Have Disk".
Next...browse to the unzipped folder and choose the "WiSVHe5.inf".Ignore XP when it complains.
Reboot.
