A common mistake people make with new memory cards in general, is that nobody formats them before using. Simply stick the card into the SD Adapter and insert it into your computer's card reader and format it. I have a 2-gig card and it works great! As for the 4-gig card, I'm not sure if it supports it. You'll have to consult your phone's manual to verify that, I don't have mine handy.
Alot of 4gb memory cards are sdhc, the phone is not compatible with a sdhc. As far as your computer reading a memory card, you have to have a reader writer in the computer. If you have that go to Media Player 11 and sync your card. Press sync and if you have a reader writer it will sync the card and you just drag and drop the music. As far as ringtones, I use BitPim (it now recognizes the u-740) and it's easy and fast.
It might not work because as i know the maximum external mem that you can put in sch-u740 is just 2-gig micro sd... that's why it won't work and there were times that it might shut down or turned off automatically....

Different devices do not always recognize SD cards formatted by another device. To preclude losing your information, transfer information using a cable. If you reformat on your computer, you may have to reformat again to use in phone.
plug the device up to the computer with the micro sd installed and open to view files.........next save the music to the music folder in DCIM. there ya go.....and if you have a micro - mini sd adapter then you can just pop it into your computer after you have formated it on your device. But remember that if you do it out of the phone you will have to format the card by going to the sd menu and selecting format.
You are probably trying to format a micro-SD card that is greater than 2GB eg, micro-SDHC (High Capacity) of 4GB or bigger are not supported by 'older' devices. Stick to 1Gb or 2Gb standard microSD cards for your device.
If the phone doesn't come with a usb cord, then the easiest way that I've found is loading all the music to a micro SD card and just inserting it back into my phone. If your phone doesn't have a micro sd slot either, and you get internet on your phone, you have to find a mobile friendly download site, which are all over the place. Hope some of this helps.
if you are holding the phone with the camera lens toward you, the micro sd slot is on the right side ...owners manual pgs 11,12
the adapter does not go into the phone
the adapter you got should be the size and shape of a regular sd card...this is for insertion into memory card reader/writers...the micro sd card fits into the top of the adapter....it just makes it easier for you to transfer images to and from your computer or separate digital camera that holds a full size sd card
