I am having a similar problem but it's occurring on my desktop at work. I Have been trying to open MS word files from the shared drive in my office and they won't open properly. Word files saved to my own computer won't open properly either. Basically all the happens is word opens but the document doesn't show up. I then close word to try again and it gives me the following error message:

First shut down Word and any other Office programs (such as Outlook).

On the Start menu, select Run, type regedit in the box and click OK.

In the Regedit program, the parts of the registry appear on the left in a tree
diagram like the one in the file manager. Expand the icons in this order:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER
Software
Microsoft
Office
12.0
Word
Data

Click on the Data icon and press the Delete key. You'll be asked to confirm that
you want to delete the key; say yes. You can now close the Regedit program.

Then restart Word and test it.

Suggest OpenOffice instead.

1) Anything generated on a computer with OpenOffice, can be used on a computer with MS Office.

2) Anything generated on a computer with MS Office, can be used on a computer with OpenOffice.

3) There is no 'learning curve'. The user interface of OpenOffice looks VERY close to MS Office.

4) It is F-R-E-E

(Told MS Office to....um, well..........and have been using OpenOffice since. More than 3 years ago. Tired of MS Office 'parlor tricks', and losing saved documents, (Try 3 years of tax papers)

Am I proficient with using an office program? Nope. Admit it. I am a computer hardware geek.
Still stand by OpenOffice though, because those who ARE proficient, say it is GOOD.

Just my 2cents, John.

Problem with microsoft word

You may be running into incoming files produced by Microsoft Office 2007 edition. Older MS Office versions cannot open the new format included in MS Office 2007, but 2007 can read earlier versions. Microsoft.com provides a fix for this problem at this link so your older version of MS Office will be compatible with the new MS Office 2007 format.
