Question about Projection Televisions

2 Answers

I have a Vizio 50" HDM Plasma TV. Had it for approx. 2 years, when I turned on the TV, a very loud "pop" sound was heard and the screen went black. The TV was powered off an on, after a couple of tries, the TV turned on again but the image was unclear (lacking colors and poor resolution). After approx 1 hr of watching, the screen image was deteriorating and now I can only see vertical "strips" that are white in color. Is it worth fixing?

    Hi,
Thanks for the reply, it has nothing to do with the outside wiring, even without any input signals the TV still shows the same, I can't see anything including the menu screen, etc.

I opened the back of the TV to see any burned out or leakeage in any components, and could not visually see anything. One Board has a couple of LEDs that are green all the time, another board has a blinking green LED.

If I can get some guidance and I think I can try to extract and replace boards.

  • andronicoc Feb 25, 2008

I am out of Warranty and I live in Southern California (Orange County)

  • andronicoc Feb 25, 2008

I believe that the Model number is P50HDM, but as far as the part I want, I have no idea... That is the reason I am asking for assistance, because I don't know where is the source of this problem.

  • andronicoc Feb 25, 2008

So, just to verify, the first step is to get the control board replaced. P/N 00040000010. I will take a look in the back of the TV once I get home and see how difficult it is to extract this board. Is there anything else to do or expect at this moment?

Do you have any idea how much this PCBA costs (ball park range? Any further help in getting this part is appreciated. Keep me posted,

HI,

I want you to check the cable box if all the wires are attached properly because sometimes it causes disturbance and vertical lines occur.
Here are few troubleshooting steps you can try:

ONE: Disconnect the power cord for 4 hours. Then when you power it back up the internal soft codes will automatically reset to factory defaults.

TWO: The whacking test is to just bang or smack the set with your hand on the back, side, top, etc., to see if there are loose connections or cold solder joints inside that are acting up. If so, the banging should knock them back to normal and the set should restore. You might have to use some creative banging and some have had to put a book or magazine under one corner to torque the chassis enough to get it to work reliably.

If the problem still persists you have to get it repaired the repair can cost anything between $200-300.

Goodluck..

depends on whether you wish to dig into the back of this device, and replace one or two boards, and based on their availability, too

    what's your technical skills level?

  • Patrick Michaels
    Patrick Michaels Feb 25, 2008

you are in for at least the control board, and possibly the power supply, even though having any signal suggests that power supply is fine..you'll see a load of options here soon, so choose your solution based on what YOU are willing and capable of doing yourself.

ok..well..then, if you have power to main control board, then you are most likely looking at a replacement of that for certain...again, what is your comfort level with the technical aspects?

  • Patrick Michaels
    Patrick Michaels Feb 25, 2008

ok..that's not too big of a deal..you'll need to get a replacement board first, though...what part of the world are you in? and I'm assuming that the unit is NOT under warranty, correct?

  • Patrick Michaels
    Patrick Michaels Feb 25, 2008

the actual replacement is not that difficult, really..just need to have right tools, and patience..and Do NOT mix the hardware,

Vizio TV heard lot pop len lhen lost sound and picture but them comes on

l suspect power supply board has failed---someone would have to open and check all voltage going in and out of the board----if outs are missing (any) the board would have to be replaced.

If you get it open examine the filter caps on the power supply board to see if any are puffed up on top---the tops are silver and should be perfectly flat with no brown material leaking out at top or bottom.

I suspect based on description a component (likely a big IC) failed and they are usually covered with a metal heat sink (plate) so cannot be actually seen---they pop and dead set.

RCA HD50LPW164 turned on TV made a pop

the loud pop you heard was probably a capacitor blowing its top. The grinding noise is likely high voltage arching that was occuring due to rising voltage since capacitor isn't there to smooth it out.

Tv went out after loud pop and has clicking noise does not turn on

If you have a Sony DLP, then the loud pop you heard is your lamp.  The lamps last approx. 4K-6K viewing hours.  Read your manual for replacement part number to reorder and very simple to replace yourself.

its the capacitor on the power board that pop.they over heat its like a computer power supply if you had no fan to keep it cool..replace the capacitors on the power supply and it should work.if you can think of a way to keep the board cooler it wont happen again.
