Viewfinder is black

When I turn on my camera and take offf the lens cap the viewfinder is black and I can't see the object that I want to take a picture of. I can see the menu and the settings. I would really like some kind of info so I can start using the camera again.

Same problem. Everything seems to work fine except camera "sees" only black. The flash goes off every time I take a pic. I put in a fresh battery and reset the camera to factory settings. Nothing helped.

My screen is not a solid black but has a static haze over it. When I take a photo, the static transfers to the photo itself.

I see nothing but black in the view finder or the LCD screen on my Nikon 5700.

To those of you having the problems with the black screen or a "jumbled colors" screen. There is a recall on this camera for that problem. I work for a Police Department and we bought 12 of these cameras. We have already had to send back 9 of them for this problem. Here is the link for the form dealing with the recall. They will repair it for free in about two weeks. Just follow the instructions.

If you're asking about the electronic viewfinder (where you put your eye to the back of the camera), that can be turned on/off via the SEL button at the button right corner of the viewfinder. In fact, the LCD screen staying on/off is selected with the same button. Press it three times to cycle through the various modes of "viewing". If the viewfinder or LCD stays off after cycling through the SEL button selections, I would say your camera needs to be serviced at a repair shop.

I hope this helps!

Why is there is no image, only a black screen with icons

You could have a setting for looking through the viewfinder only, which turns off the LCD display.
Of course, make sure your lens cap was not left on. Also there is usually a setting for looking at pictures you took. or looking through the lens. If you have no images saved, there will be nothing to see.
Set the camera back to view through lens.

When i turn on the camera the lcd screen is black and when i turn off the lcd the viewfinder is also black, no objects are seen, menu items can be seen but no objects

A stuck shutter is another common failure mode for digital cameras. The symptoms of a stuck or "sticky" shutter are very similar to CCD image sensor failure. The camera may take black pictures (for shutter stuck closed), or the pictures may be very bright and overexposed, especially when taken outdoors (for shutter stuck open).

To confirm a stuck shutter, put the camera in any mode other than "Auto", and turn the flash OFF (you don't want to blind yourself for the next step). Next look down the lens and take a picture. You should see a tiny flicker in the center of the lens as the shutter opens and closes. If no movement is seen, then you likely have a stuck shutter. If so, please see this link for further info and a simple fix that may help.

Lcd display not working on nikon d40. When we turn on the camera, and take off the lens cap, the lcd display is black. we can use the viewfinder to take a photo. We can view the image after taking the...

The D40 works the same way SLRs have worked for the past half century. Only recently have dSLRs acquired a "Live-View" capability, where you see the image on the LCD monitor instead of through the viewfinder.

I realize this probably wasn't the answer you wanted to see, but that's the way it is.

Black screen on my s6500 fd

I assume you removed the lens cap...;-)
If both the viewfinder and the screen is black, it is most likely an error on the CCD. If the viewfinder is OK, but the screen is dead, the problem is probably the LCD.
Hopefully you still have warranty on the camera?

If Canon S1 IS does not show picture in camera mode and show memory card stored pictures in playback then its CCD Imgaer problem and ccd imager will be replaced.
Canon will repair it free of cost, click Canon CCD Imager Advisory for details.

My Canon 300D SLR will turn on, and led display comes up saying battery is full and yet when you go to take a photo you cant see anything but black through the lens.

Obvious Questions, but you didn't supply the information.....:

1. Is the lens cap off?
2. Are you looking through the viewfinder? You will *NOT* be able to use the LCD screen as a viewfinder.

Otherwise, there is always a light path through the lens to the viewfinder, so....

1. Have you tried a different lens?
2. Have you checked the mirror is down?

Why is part of a picture missing?

The cause and solution may include one of the following: Something was blocking the lens when the picture was taken. Keep hands, fingers, or other objects away from the lens when taking pictures. Your eye or the picture was not centered correctly in the viewfinder or LCD. Leave space around the subject when centering the picture in the viewfinder or the LCD.
