Try changing the IDE cable, if this does not work enter BIOS setup utilityand ensure HDD detection mode is either aouto select or IDE depending on your BIOS you may have to look for a setting that allows you to use IDE not SATA or both.

Dell Gx60 doesnt recorgnize hdd and cd rom

If both the HDD and CDRom are on the same cable, try replacing the cable. Check the jumpers to make sure they are set correctly as well. If neither of these work, it's likely your IDE controller (that is where you plug the ribbon cable into your motherboard) is defective. You can try to move it to the other IDE controller to see if that works. If not, you may have to replace the motherboard.... assuming you know the HDD and CDRom drives are good. I hope this helps!

I have a 250gb seagate sata but when i put my 80gb IDE hdd it only detects in booting and in bios but after that if i open my computer i cant see my 80gb IDE Hdd and even in device manager my hard disk was...

there was wrong in the set up of jumper in your 80gb hdd. Look closely to the 80gb harddrive, in between the ide cable terminal and the power supply connector you will see 8pin terminals paired together and a jumper use to short the paired terminals. It is most likely that the jumper was configure to detect your hdd as master. If the ide cable you use for the 80gb hdd was also use for the dvd/cdrom drive then it will conflict with it if both jumper setting was set to master. See the description of jumper settings in the sticker of the hdd. Position the jumper to slave.

Reboot your system again and see if the 80gb finally appear in your system. When system boot upon detection of hdd, the primary master should be 250gb while your primary/secondary slave will be read your 80gb hard disk.

"no valid device!" message

Did you connect your HDD correctly?

If so have a look at the back of your HDD, next to the IDE port you will find a small jumper, make sure that jumper is set to master.

Enter your Bios and check that your boot priority is set to boot from the HDD first.

Also make sure that your IDE cables are firmly connected on the motherboard as well as the HDD.

If I recall right this HDD is a PATA (IDE) type. As for the Jumpers please check the following link. The jumper should be as Slave drive.

Hard disk not dectecting

Is your Hard disk running at all ?
Can you hear some spinning noise and vibrations when it starts running?

Check the jumper settings (Master/Slave/Single).

If you have another device connected on the same cable (HDD/CD), check jumper settings on that device too.
You may first try to disconnect other device (if connected).

It is a very old PC, try replacing the data cable of your HDD, and pay attention of the correct connection of cable to the motherboard and HDD, too !
Check BIOS settings if both IDE channels are enabled.

Regards.

Jumpers

You can only have TWO (2) Devices in IDE - Master and Slave.

For example
Cable 1 (ide channel 1)
Master - HDD
Slave - Tape Drive

Cable 2(ide channel 2)
Master - CD/DVD drive
Slave - HDD

Do you have a diffrent type of cable?

Connecting an IDE HDD to a SATA port using an IDE to SATA converter

Not complete product...need to buy additional adapter for IDE to SATA power source.
IDE drive will have to have the power source hooked up as well as the adaptor hooked up.
Installing the adaptor only will not work. Your computer should have the 4 pin plug for the power to the IDE drive, other wise you will have to buy another adaptor.

No Boot (system does post) - Hard drives not detected • Check jumper settings on all IDE devices • Verify that IDE controller is configured correctly in the BIOS • Check to make sure that the drive is connected to the correct controller • Make sure drives are configured correctly for RAID • Verify Onchip IDE configuration for ICH5 SATA operation is set correctly • Test drives with different IDE/SATA cables
