Unfortunately the item came with no software or driver information - the impression was gained that it really was "plug & play" - I remain stumped but thanks anyway.

You will still need to install the software & drivers that came with the backup device for it to be recognized as such by the PC.

What type of ide cable for ibm 9547 hard drive

Connect the hard drive to an USB hard drive adapter then plug the USB adapter with the hard drive into the USB port of a working computer. This computer will see this as an external storage device, you can then open the various folders and files and backup or copy them to the computer.

I have a Sony VAIO GRZ610, old i know. Won't power up,

If you cannot get the laptop working then try this method.
Remove the hard drive and connect it to an USB hard drive adapter and then plug this adapter into a working computer's USB port. If this computer sees this as an USB mass storage device (external hard drive) and you can open the various folders and files, then you can backup and or transfer your data to another computer. If yiu install the hard drive in an USB hard drive case then you can use this hard drive as an external USB hard drive.

Laptop is getting heated very quickly and it is not even giving any backup charging

Try getting a portable laptop cooling system. They're about $10 on Amazon. Simply plug it in to your USB and rest your laptop on the pad. That should keep it cool. If you can't get a cooling pad, try getting two solid pieces of some (wood can work fine) and put one on either side under the laptop. Keep it elevated but away from the heating vent. This way, it's above the surface and the laptop may stay a bit cooler.
For the backup charging problem, you may need a new charger or computer battery. If the battery isn't charging, that means it dead.

Need to replace acer aspire 5314 hard drive. Where can I find one?

You need a 2.5" 150 Gigabyte drive; however, those laptops are prone to a short in the serial connection from the motherboard. This is an almost impossible task for an novice user to change a motherboard and the cost is not worth it. I installed a new hard drive and although the laptop recognized it, it still will not recognize it and load the operating system. Tested drive on another laptop and it works flawless. The hard drive became bad from the short which you can sometimes hit the bottom of the unit and make it work long enough to backup the data.

HP Pavillion dv6700 - black screen

Do the following without the battery inserted.

Let the computer sit with no battery for 24 hours. Do not put the battery in at all. Try using your original memory stick ONLY, with no hard drive and see if it will POST. If it does, insert the hard drive and try again. Could be the new memory...

Another thing you can try is reseating the processor. Turn the ZIF screw, take the processor out (WATCH THE PINS!!) and put back in GENTLY. Leave the memory in the computer, hard drive removed, try to power on.

These models have been known for bad motherboards. Contact HP and arrange to send it in. If you do enough digging on HPs website, you'll find the service advisory.

Upgrading to a 500GB hard drive.

Hello gadgeteer109....The AOD150 comes with a 160gb sata drive, so this should be a plug n play upgrade. Make sure the new drive is a notebook drive and not a desktop. You will need to install the operating system on the new drive... If you want, you can clone the original drive to the new drive before you swap them. You can download free cloning/backup software..Acronis has a free trial offer thats easy to use.You.will also need a 2.5 SATA drive enclosure, to hold the new drive while you clone the internal one to it before transfer to your computer, (these are cheap) and guess what... you can slap your old drive in it and have even MORE external storage! What a deal huh? The only tool you will need is a small phillips screwdriver.
TIP:
If you want to give the lilttle acer some rocket fuel while you have it opened up...swap out the 1GB of RAM for 2GB... A stick of Crucial 2GB 667 Mhz #CT25664AC667 DDR2 200-Pin SODIMM...will be another great plug n play upgrade for less than 25 buxs.
Hope this answers your questions and will fixya up...please take a minute to rate my response.

I PLUG IN A BRAND NEW WESTINGH. HARD DRIVER 160 GB AND COMPUTER S

did you configure the 160GB hard drive as second???
there is a shorting pin between the ribbem cable and the power cable.
take a look on the hard drive, there should have adiagram shows where the shorting pin need to go to make it as secondary drive.
install the hard drive as secondary drive.
if you want the drive to be the primary. you nee to install the operating system on it.
with out operating system the machine will boot up in to DOS only, and a error message telling you the drive has no loader.

Replace Hard Drive

Replacing a hard drive is simple, remember everything on a computer concerning hardware is plug and play. Remove the old hard drive and find a suitable replacement, it should snap right out, there may be a couple screws holding it, but once you have it out just plug in the new drive, format and partition the drive and put up your operating system.

No screen activity

Plug in an external monitor to see if it is booting normally and it is only a screen malfunction.

If you plug in an external monitor and the screen works then it's just a monitor issue.
If the external monitor doesn't light up then try unplugging the power cord, taking out the battery, holding down the power button for a minute and then plugging the AC back in trying to power it up.

If it doesn't power up. Then it's probably a motherboard issue.
I would get an external hard drive enclosure (2.5) and take out the harddrive and plug it into another computer to take the data off.
You can then send in your computer to repair somewhere but for the price, you may as well buy a new one.
