How do you adjust the replacement blades in a Makita planer if you don't have to original gauge?

The blades, at thier highest point in rotation, need to be exactly the same height as the larger back plate. Any straight edge laid on the back plate and extending over the blades will let you know if they are set properly. The straight edge should not contact the blades when they are turned (by hand) and there should be as close to no gap between the straight edge and blades as you can get.

I HAVE SHARPENED THE KNIFE BLADES HOW DO I SET THEM IN THE PLANNER

Planer blades can only go in one way, the set plate must go into the groove on the blade. If you sharpened them by hand, or even with a machine, you have to be absolutely sure both blades are EXACTLY identical and that the edges are true and straight. If not you are going to get some real interesting patterns on your wood. It's rarely advisable to sharpen planner blades and they are cheap enough to make it unnecessary.

Makita planer

I ripped this from one of my previous answers. You can specify your model from the main page.

FITTING DETAILS FOR MAKITA PLANER BLADES

It depends on the planer blade set that you are using. If you are using the the 2 sided blades there is a guage that goes with it to set the blade depth before installing. I would strongly recommend that you go to Makitatools.com and type in your model number and download a copy of the owners manual for specific instructions. Let me know if you have any problems finding them
