My laptop is having issues with playing movies & videos, they seem to be out of sync all of a sudden. It has a perfect picture, but sound is off like those old kung fu movies when people are talking and the words have to catch up. It does not matter if its a download or a music video. It was playing fine then all of a sudden now this.

Re: videos out of sync
It would take more than this page to explain how to resolve this, best bet is to uninstall player software and reinstall it with upto date codecs and it should auto configure(default)and resolve prob.suggest downloading player program vlc it plays all known media and has all codecs.(free program)

Most likely you don't have the correct CODEC that will play these files. Click on the link below, it is for a FREE media player that will play all media types including home made DVDs and dvds that would buy or rent, like at NetFlix. Just copy and paste the link to the browser address bar and download the file, click on the installer and select all for media types.
Well the good news then is that its not a hardware problem, it is most likely one of the issues below:
1- Vista muted the player that you are using: Launch the player and then at the bottom right corner by the time click on the volume control and select mixer. It should list all the programs you have open. In vista you can mute a selected program, make sure all programs are not muted
2- The volume control is turned down on the Toshiba laptop: On Toshiba laptops there is a volume dial control located either on the front or around the sides, make sure that it is not turned down. play a song and try adjusting it both ways
3- Conflict with another Video/Audio Player : Un-install any newly added media software.
YOUR CD IS CURREPTED CHECK ANOTHER CD AND DO NOT PUT AND SCRATED CD INTO THE CD ROM IF YOUR CD IS GOOD CONDITION SO YOU CAN BRING A LENS CLEANER CD ITS NOT VERY EXPENSIVE YOU CAN EASILY BUY IT AND ENJOY
In XP go to device manager and expand list of IDE ATA ATAPI controllers. Right click on primary IDE controller and select properties. In advanced screen check primary IDE mode - that should be DMA.
IF that is in PIO mode - that is your problem.
Just click on driver tab in the same window and click uninstall.
REstart computer twice and problem should be solved.
