1. Midi files must be Midi-0 format and have short ????????.mid names
2. Files must be within a special folder (directory) named "MUSICDAT"
3. After you press the SMF player button, you need to change from internal to card using the right arrow key first and then the down arrow key to select. The first file on the card will then be displayed.
4. You many then use right arrow key or + key or numbers to select your SMF.
I found that the maximum number of files on the SD card is 256 (from 0 to 255)

My MIDI won't play back even when I play the file, no matter which program I use to play it. The computer I use is a Compaq Presario, I have Cakewalk Home Studio 2002 on it, and my sound card is SB X-FI...

The default MIDI setting of your PC may have been set for another MIDI device (for example, if Cakewalk Home Studio has been used with a MIDI compatible keyboard). Go to... Control Panel / Sounds and Audio Devices / Audio / MIDI music playback and change the setting back to your soundcard (and set as default if you prefer).

Do not get MIDI signal via EDIROL UA25

Midi is data only, there is no actual sound to the midi tracks themselves. They need to be assigned to either a software synth or an external synth to actually make the sounds you want to hear.

For instance if you load a demo of a midi sequance you will need to add a software synth such as the TTS-1 or Roland sound canvas which are general midi compatable and will play the instruments sounds assigned to the demo's midi channels. Use the Synth Rack feature in Sonar to open one of them. Then you will need to assign the output of each of the midi tracks to that particular synth and you will get sound. Make sure to assing the synth's audio track to you UA-25 as its audio output.

I would suggest reading in the manual and following the tutorials included in the manual to get yourself familier with how this is all done. spacer.gif

No midi sound

In sonar go to the options menu and select: Audio -->advance. and from the list select the "Asio" driver, then you'll have a new midi output (synthe sw...) select it to have a sound while playing MIDI files.

No midi out device is detected

If you dont have a joystick port on the card, then you dont have a midi out. make sure your "out" or"playback" is patched to your card's synthesis engine, wavetable or GM/GS midi playback, and not to a "midi out" which really means a physical midi port.

Midi OUT has "holes"

Midi out on your soundcard to midi in on your keyboard. Midi out on your keybaord to midi in on your soundcard It's a lot to do with audio drivers, asio drivers are a lot better than standard realtec drivers. A lot depends on your cpu memory etc, midi sends more than just one note at a time I can play all ten fingers on midi and that's with really powerful virtual synths. Cpu memory drivers all effect audio and midi

Problem with stability

Celeron CPU's will struggle with making music and limit what you can do with audio. Celerons are ok to play music but nor really for making music. Firewire is a better option for making music as it's really fast unlike USB. An option would be to get a faster CPU and try the soundcard again. But i would not use USB audio and would use an Audiophile 2496 soundcard as they are really cheap. Also midi is data and not audio, midi just works virtual instruments and is able to control keyboards through midi out. But first try a better CPU as a celeron isant that good for makign music. I know becouse i've been there done that and go really upset with the same problems your having at the moment. I played the midi files on cuabse and recorded it onto an audio chanel.
