Question about Singer 7442 Mechanical Sewing Machine

Open Question

Singer 7442 Timing

Machine sews fine in a straight line but it appears to not be picking up thread to the left of the centre.
It has recently jammed a couple of time as my partner didn't properly read the instruction manual before use... even though i told her to, as she had another machine befreo she was fairly confident... anyhow, either thread quality, tension or something made it Jam and when i called singer he said I may have to bring it in.
Under 5 years Warrantee so it is for free.
But to save hassle I am wondering if there is a way I am able to correct the timing myself?
Cheers guys,

Here's how you set the timing od the Machine alright:
1. Take the side plate off, take the needle plate off.
2. Take the presser foot off, and put a new needle in the machine. 3. Make sure that the needle is in the lowest position and look at the needle bar for the two timing lines. Locate the top line.
4. Then, turn the handwheel toward you until the top line is where the bottom line was.
At this point, the tip of the hook should be directly in the scarf of the needle.
This should set the timing of the machine perfect....

SOURCE: Singer 7442, how do I adjust the timing?

Have you changed your needle? What needles are you
using?Other than that it may be that your needle may be
too high and not in the right position. So I would
play with maybe bringing it down a little bit at a time -
and hand turn your wheel.

My machine is new (only used once) but now keeps jamming, appears the needle keeps jamming under the plate, please help.

if it' still under warrenty take it back and get another..if it's not under warrenty, try a new needle, make sure the top thread is not coming off the thread take up lever, make sure the bobbin is turned the right way in the bobbin case, also could be a timing problem

How do i check if the timing is correct

Put in a new needle. Thread machine with same thread top and bottom. Set upper tension to default (4/5 usually) and sew in straight stitch with needle in default position (usually centre) some times left. Turn hadwheel by hand towards you for the first two stitches to ensure needle not hitting hook or driver. If machine sews find, then try the zig zag. If both these are good, timing is good. If not, and stitches are skipping or not forming, it could be a timing issue and you should take it to a tech

The bobbin thread will not pick up. The machine had jammed and I forced the wheel and can't get bobbin thread to pick up. When I thread manually, I only get holes, no stitches. Is it a timing belt?

check your needle to see if it's bent---roll on flat surface to see if it roll correctly
on some sewing machines when the thread comes off the thread take up lever it can cause the machine to jam
also if the bobbin thread becomes tangled it can jam
check the bobbin area for lint or loose threads
try having a top thread tail & bobbin thread tail of 3-4 inches
try holding the top thread tail & turn the handwheel on the right side on the machine manually & put the needle down into the bobbin area & see if the bobbin thread will pick up that way

Consew 230 sewing machine...will not pick up bobber thread

needle should be 16x257 Industrial machine needle with no flat side.
It does have a long groove on one side and a scallop just above the eye of the needle on the other side. On this machine the needle is inserted so that the long groove goes to the left and it threads left to right.
The thread breakage may be caused by a rough place on the hook. You need to turn the machine on it's back and look and feel all the way around the hook assembly. If you find a rough spot it can be removed with an emery stick. If it's not a rough spot, then the machine is probably out of time.

Needle thread will not pick up bobbin thread

Needle may need to be changed. Be sure it is the correct needle for the machine.

Just replaced my uppper looper on my white 1634....

The upper looper goes just in front of the needles. I had issues with my machine when I got some fabric jammed and the looper moved so it wasn't catching the left needle and it was sewing a straight stitch on the left. The looper needs to be placed in front of the needles and very close to the needles without hitting them.

Hope this helps!
