Definitely a software problem, somewhere along the installation process, the data on the CD is being read wrong. Try a different installation disk, and see if this fixes the problem. If not, then it could be that there is either a problem with the CD drive, or the IDE controller for the Hard Drive.

If you can't keep your laptop stable and on for longer period, and you're experiencing random shutdowns I'd say you're facing a motherboard problem. This failure is actually well known and hapens a lot with Toshiba and HP. You'll most probably need to repair the motherboard that suffers from the Maxim 1987 or Maxim 1532 power chip failure.
The repair process is fairly straightforward, but it isn't for the faint hearted. It requires a resolder of the tiny Maxim 1987 chip that should get your motherboard up and running again in no time. The other alternative is to go for a new motherboard, or just get a new laptop alltogether.
If however your laptop experiences random freezeups, and you notice that the DVD is slow at reading data, and especially if you experienced some random mouse and keyboard freezeups, then you'll need to repair the motherboard from a FSB chip failur, which causes these random freezeups, which is a bit easier to do but still a challenge.
Hope this helps

Nx9010 notebook coming up with disk read error dont have recovery disc this is my granson's computer

it`s very possible to be a hard drive error, the main thing what you can do is to try to install the operating system over the old one if that goes ok it means that you had a premature shutdown and the files where corrupted if the problem persist it`s a hardware problem.. solution is to buy another harddrive

PC SHUTS DOWN MONITOR AND FAN

Hi Brandy19960,

Thanks for the posting in FIXYA.

Please do the following steps:

Step – 1

Right-click on My Computer, open Properties, click the Advanced tab. Under “Startup & Recovery,” click Settings. Under “System Failure,” Uncheck the box in front of “Automatically restart.”

Step - 2

To change the setting, click Start --> Run--> type GPEDIT.MSC, click OK.

Drill down to Computer Configuration | Windows Settings | Security Settings | Local Policies | Security Options.

In the right pane, find “Shutdown: Clear Virtual Memory Pagefile.”

NOTE: Since someone actually has to have set this policy, the problem will be pretty rare, but is worth mentioning. However, Forum participant “roadrunner” reported that the personal security app Privacy Eraser automatically enables “Clear virtual memory pagefile,” and, therefore, may be the cause of a slow shutdown.

Step - 3

When Windows XP won’t powerdown automatically, the APM/NT Legacy Power Node may not be enabled. To enable this, right-click on the My Computer icon, click Properties | Hardware | Device Manager | View. Check the box labeled “Show Hidden Devices.” If it’s available on your computer, there will be a red X on the APM/NT Legacy Node. Try enabling it and see if this resolves the powerdown problem (Tip from Terri Stratton). Or, to check the other side of the APM/ACPI coin, open the Power Options applet in Control Panel. If there is an APM tab, make sure the “Enable Advanced Power Management Support” box is checked.

Step - 4
----------

Try a Shutdown shortcut -

For a shortcut to RESTART Windows XP:
SHUTDOWN -r -t 01

For a shortcut to SHUT DOWN Windows XP:
SHUTDOWN -s -t 01

Step 5
---------

WORK-AROUND: Disable power management for your USB hub: Open Device Manager (click Start, click Run, type DEVMGMT.MSC, click OK). Double-click to expand Universal Serial Bus Controllers. Double-click USB Root Hub. Click Power Management. Uncheck the box “Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power.” OK your way out

Step – 6
-----------
Click on the Start button.
Select Run from the menu.
In the run dialog box type “msconfig”.
Click OK.

Once in the msconfig utility select the startup tab. In the startup tab you will see several programs listed with a checkbox beside it. If there is a check mark beside the application listed, the application will startup when your computer starts up.

Regards
ELLIN

Hi,
try uninstalling any software relating to the printer.
shutdown the computer. Remove any printer to computer cables. Re-boot ( startup ) the computer.
let it set itself up. then shutdown.
turn off the power to computer, put your printer cable back in, as if you were installing it for the first time.
the computer should have found new hardware ( your printer ) And ask for a driver. ensure your HP disk is in the drive, and ask to search Drive D:- Or E:- wherever your CD is located.
If it,s already got the latest drivers installed, i would,nt worry unless your printers not functioning correctly.
