Question about Nikon D50 Digital Camera

The auto focus is not working on my Nikon D50

I am not sure why, but the auto focus on my Nikon D50 is suddenly not working. I have tried cleaning the lens, changing the AF/M button back to AF, but it still does not work. When I switch to manual focus the camera takes blurred pictures. What could be the problem? Please help!

I had originally thought that the lens was dirty so I cleaned it.

No, it does not even try to focus..... basically does nothing.

No, unfortunately I have only this one lens.

Well, best to try and find one either at a store or through a friend. There is really no way to tell which part (camera or lens) is at fault.
Have you checked the search by zip code to find a repair person in your area?

It would be great if you had another lens to test with. That way we would know if tit is the body or the lens. Do you have another or access to one?

Have you checked and cleaned the contacts on the lens? Does it try to focus? or just no movement what so ever?

In the manual focus mode, you would have to focus yourself, Which lens?

I assume the AF/M switch on the body is set to AF as well? This has not been mentioned but the D50 has two drive systems for AF.

Did you or someone you know recently drop the camera?

I have had two of these lenses and both have had issues. One had a similar issue and was repaired under warranty.

Here are a few troubleshooting steps:
-Do you hear anything when you try to focus (motor, etc)?
-Looking inside the viewfinder as you try to focus manually, does the green dot on bottom left ever appear (indicating focus lock)?
-Does lens move when set to "m" and you twist the focus ring?
-If lens moves when you twist, can you see the inner glass "eye" getting closer or more distant to the outer glass on the lens?
-Is A/F assist on? Set to ILLUM? If so, find a darker area and set camera to "Auto". Light should come on to A/F assist indicating the camera body is attempting to focus.

I agree with other poster: take camera to Ritz or other shop and ask them if you can check out a few lenses. Mount them to your camera and see what happens.

Nikon D50 will not autofocus, the menue item 02 Autofocus is no highlighed and I can not set it

You should check two switches.

First, on your lens, be sure it's set to M/MA not M. That puts the lens in auto focus mode.

On the camera there should be a switch that shows C/S/M. If switched to M, it's on manual focus. Change this to S for single auto focus or C for continuous auto focus.

The camera doesnt auto focus

If the lens has an aperture ring, be sure it is set to "A". Try cleaning the contacts on the lens and camera body where they meet with a cotton swab lightly dampened with rubbing alcohol.

Nikon 28-80mm lens will not auto focus, D50 body works okay.

Try cleaning the contacts on the camera body with alcohol and a cotton swab. You could also look at the contacts on the lens, but normally the ones on the camera are the issue.

So you having problem with AF problem?

Try this (mind your camera to protect it from dust OR another small parts to get in while you opening):
1. Re-connect the lens and the camera.
2. Make sure the connectors is clean.
3. Connect it together again.

I figured out that when changing lenses my finger must have hit the little switch and flipped it over to manual focus. I changed it back and it now works. Thanks.

Focusing problem

Well, stupid me, I didn't realize there is a diopter adjustment button directly to the right of the viewfinder. I would NEVER have known it was there, but after asking my photo-nerd friends all of a sudden the solution was apparent. Still a wasted day of shooting, but hey now I don't have to look like an idiot taking my camera somewhere to be serviced!

I can't focus with my nikon D50

Perhaps you have accidentally set the auto-manual focus to manual on the camera body?

Per.

PS. The r10 message is just a report of the current memory buffer status, not an error indication.

Camera won't autofocus

Auto-focus technology on this camera is controlled by several contacts on the mount that physically mate with other contacts on your lens. It sounds like your mount may be malfunctioning due to wear and tear (if cleaning does not work). This is between $100 and $300 fix depending on which part(s) need replacement.

I have this problem too - Nikon have looked at the camera and said I set up a custom setting so that the focus only works when you press the AE/AF Button (!). I also had a problem with the flash not working - its looking like this is a known problem. I think I was sold a Turkey
