You will need a socket with very thin walls because there is very little clearance around the drain bolt.

the 17mm open end wrench in your tool kit works great for removing the drain bolts.just hope nobody tightened it the last time to super tight.

Where is the oil drain plug on a 2002 BMW 325i

It is located on the oil pan, please be advised the oil pan is also the casting that houses the front differential, and the engine oil drain is the hex nut furthest to the rear of of the pan . You will need a 17mm wrench to remove the hex nut . After you drain the oil, DO NOT over tighten the plug . The proper torque is 25 newton/meters or about 20 foot/pounds

I cannot get a crescent, 17mm socket, or 17mm open end wrench on the rear left side crankcase drainbolt to save my life. I can easily access and remove the oil pan drainbolt and the front crankcase bolt,...

The clearence between the bolt heads and crankcase is very tight u might have to take a old 17mm socket and grind it down a little to get it on the bolt head. I think one bolt is for the oil in the engine and the back one is for the dry sump, there is oil in both at any given time.

Roadliner oil drain plugs

Then it sounds as if a special wrench is needed to remove the oil drain plug, unless there is an alternate way to remove it.
So what you are saying is the frame or engine case is in the way of putting a wrench on the plug?
Here's link to a PDF downloadable owner's manual,

Ok, I saw in the manual where the oil drain bolts are located, they are in a poor spot.
I suggest you call a dealer and politely ask what wrench they use to remove the drain bolts.

Drain plugs

Under the crank case. Just take a small mirror & watch the bottom of the crankcase. You can locate the hexagon bolt in the reflection view.
