Kingston datatraveler 8G shows write protection error, contain a virus outorun.inf, cannot save, cannot be formated and cannot delete. Please help.

1. Open Notepad and do not write anything in it. Just go to File > Save as (save it with the name: autorun.inf)

2. Copy the autorun.inf file that you have created in the above step and paste in your "Pen Drives"

3. Remove your pen drive.

After removing the pendrive, re-insert in your PC. Now your anti-virus will not detect any virus in your PC. And Your pendrive is 100% safe to use.

I am having a Seagate FreeAgent portable hard drive(500GB), a corrupted icon is being shown when I attach it to any PC and it gives a dialogue box of "open with" when I double click on it, But I...

Hi amanvirdi198

The problem seems to be an infection of a virus which has changed the icon of your removable drive and also when you open it up you get the "open with" option by default.

Please follow the below instructions.

  • Select show all files option from the folder options which you find in the start menu the path is :-Start - Control Panel - Tools menu - Folder options.
  • In folder options go in the view tab and select show hidden and system files.
  • Once you are done selecting this option , all you need to do is open your removable drive by right clicking on it and select the 'Open' Option , Or if that does not work use the explore option as you have been doing already .
  • You will find that the hard disk now shows up the contents, so you need to find the autorun.inf file in the root drive , once you find it , you have to 'delete' that file, also delete any suspicious hidden .exe file which is in hidden state and of a small size , which is nothing but a virus which spreads as soon as you plug in your external hard drive and the autorun.inf file get's executed automatically.
  • Therefore once when you delete the autorun file , you should have your hard drive working properly.
  • The above method was the manual method , now if you want to delete the autorun problem automatically via a software , i recommend you to download autorun virus killer by clicking on this link http://bit.ly/k3dOve

Hope this helps...:)

Your feed back would be appreciated.

Unit downloaded fine ad the did the back up of the drive fine.started the updates and the firmware stopped and then the drive locked up how to access the drive again after reboot nothing shows G: F:

  1. To restore the Western Digital icon to the drive letter for the external drive in "My Computer".
  2. Please go to the Western Digital Download Library and download the WD Logo Icon which has a file name of External Icon.zip when you download it.
  3. Save the file to your desktop and use a file compression software like Winzip to extract the files inside the .zip file to your desktop. When it's unzipped, it will create a folder named "ExternalIcon" on your desktop.
  4. Double-click on the ExternalIcon folder. It will open a Windows Explorer showing a folder named, Autorun, and a file named, Autorun.inf.Double-click on My Computer and it will open.
  5. Double-click on the driver letter that represents the Western Digital drive you want the icon on and it will open.
  6. Highlight the Autorun folder and the Autorun.inf file. Right-click on them, and left-click on Cut when the Menu appears.
  7. Right-click in the open space of the drive that you opened in the new Explorer window, and then left-click on Paste.
  8. Close both Explorer windows, safely remove the external hard drive by using the Safely Remove icon in the system tray, shut down the computer, and unplug the external drive from the computer.
  9. After you reboot into Windows, reconnect the external drive to the computer again, and the Western Digital Icon should now be displayed with the drive letter in My Computer.

If these steps do not correct the problem, you will need to re-format your External Hard Drive ***WARNING*** FORMATTING A HARD DRIVE WILL ERASE, YOU WILL LOSE, ALL DATA

ok .. firstly your hd contains a autorun.inf file that the comouter detects and follows the instructions of.. This file gets overwritten or deleted it fails to work.. Also more than likely it has a virus infection.. The virus spreads by overwriting you autorun file to initiate itself everytime you connect your harddrive.. You will need to run a virus scan and remove it..

To remove the autorun the virus has created ples
  • connect your drive
  • click start then computer
  • right click you WD hard drive and click explore
  • find the autorun.inf file,, right click and click edit.. or open with notepad
  • replace the contents of the file with the following
[WD Silent Installer]
Model=My Passport Essential
Program1=WDSetup.exe

thats it ,, save it and exit..

PS REMOVE VIRUS FIRST.. USE AVG FREE ANTIVIRUS AND SUPERANTI SPYWARE..

Access is denied

Hi
Possible reason is
that your pendrive Contains
An autorun.inf file pointing to a *.exe file(possiblly a virus)

So either you run a scan with good antivirus
or
You can delete the file manually by

> Goto>> Run>>Type the drive letter of your pendrive and follow a full colon(Eg: "C:")
then just enter
now if you cant see the autorun.inf file
you go to folder options to change the view
that is (go to tab view )

1. tick "show hidden files and folders "
2. Untick " Hide operating system files"
Apply it

now you will see the autorun.inf file just delete it

It will solve your problem

My Mac will not store data on my wd external hard-drive

Take it back to where you bought it, and get a replacement,
or at least get them to demonstrate that it _does_ work, when connected to a Mac computer (not a Windows computer).

I have a 500 GB Seagate Freeagent Pro Ext Hard Drive (USB). The hard drive is appearing in My Computer. But the Icon is not the one that should be appearing. When I click on the drive, the drive does not...

The autorun file in the drive has been modified. A virus should have done that and in turn your anitvirus must have found and removed the virus. Hence windows is now trying to find the missing application. You can revert this by either removing the autorun file in the root folder, or by modifying it to your liking. If you need further assistance, comment back.

My Book (G:) icon is different

Hi,
no you there iss no big problem.
The icon of your hdd iss created from the autorun.inf

http://www.fiveanddime.net/notes/hd-icons.html

Change hard drive icons Change hard drive icons:

To change the icon for your hard drive, create the
following file in notepad:

[autorun]
icon=C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\Pifmgr.dll,36

Notice it's two lines.
If your hard drive is C:
click Save As... and navigate to C:
and save it as autorun.inf
enclose it in quotes so Notepad won't put a .txt
on the end of it
The path specified is the typical Windows path
yours may vary, but you'll have that dll file.
The 36 at the end is the number of the icon I chose.
(Icons in a file are numbered, starting at 0.)
To see the change, open Windows Explorer; click
F5 if needed to refresh.
To preview your icon options, select an icon on
your desktop, right-click and select
Properties, then Change Icon. You can also select
any other .dll file in your computer, although most
won't have icons.
The common Windows icons are in
C:\Windows\System\shell32.dll
(xp = C:\Windows\System32\shell32.dll)
You can also point to a single icon.
Using the example above:

[autorun]
icon=c:\windows\cursors\myicon.ico

I have three hard drives and nine partitions; under
WinMe, I had to move the icon/dll to each
partition and edit the autorun.ini, i.e.
C:\Windows\System\Pifmgr.dll,32 became Pifmgr.dll,32.
WinMe also wouldn't let me change the icons
for the primary partitions of the first two
drives, but did let me change the
primary partition icon of the third drive.

Autorun file

hi.. well firstly your external hd does not require an autorun.inf file to function. autorun.inf files are used to instruct the computer to perform a certin task on connecting or inserting a a disc. This is used by software vendors to automatically run a setup program (or any app) so it will be user friends. basically you insert the disc and it runs automatically. A virus will use this method on external media like hd's and usb drives or flash drives to automatically execute themselves to infect the host system. There should not be a file as such on your ext hd. Thankfully your antivirus is doing its job :)
