IBM Think Pad T42

Dear all,

The problem with my laptop has started just 20 days back, it is like this:

Even a small movement of the laptop while working, makes it hand, and the display of the screen will get blurred and thereby goes blank. You need to switch it off directly from the power button as everything else is hanged. Switching on again will result in blank screen, but system will be show as working. The solution I got by chance was of pressing the keyboard while the laptop is off and then switch it on, by doing this it is getting bootted in the normal manner. Can anybody suggest, what exactly is the problem and how the same can be rectified?

I opened my T42's keyboard and cleaned the fan & other areas, it has started working more stronger same time but still the problem persists, as i am totally zero in hardware, please guide me how to locate video chip in T42 or else if you can give a link to step - to- step guide.

    Thanks & Regards

I had a hard drive fail and subsequently replaced by the Geek Squad. I don't know what they may have done, but about a month later the video screen would go blank. It definitely has something to do with pressure on the keyboard or movement of the computer. The only way to bring it back, is to manually power it down and reboot (may take several attempts). It will then function normal until the next blackout. I hooked it up to an external monitor, so it is not the laptop monitor. I suspect the motherboard/video chip (other web postings confirm this thought).

I have the same problem with my T42.. From googling i have found many similar case. So this is really weakness of  T42. Repair it and sold your old thinkpad. Replace with another new one, this problem can be happened in the next.

Good day to you!
It sounds very much like the video chip is beginning to separate from the motherboard. This is a somewhat common problem on the T41s & T42s. I've had this happen on a couple of T41s, myself.
A short term fix that can be tried is to remove the keyboard and wedge something between the top of the video chip and the bottom of the cover located to the left of the touchpad assembly. I would suggest something small and nonmetallic. A small piece of pop sickle or craft stick is good as it can easily be carved to shape. If this helps to resolve the problem, you've pretty much verified that you have found the problem.
The real fix is to reflow the solder on the video chip. Because its easier to show someone how to do this, rather than explain the process; I would suggest that you go to YouTube and search on either "heatgun" of "T41". There are several examples of how to do this posted there.
If you still have questions after reviewing those examples, just ask and I will assist as much as I can.

The video chip is located on the mother board directly under the center of the spacebar.
The video chip is a rectangular chip that usually is marked with the name of "Radeon". It is located to the right and towards the front of the laptop from of the CPU assembly.
The first thing that I would do is to download a maintenance manual for this machine from the Leveno website. This will provide the steps needed to remove the motherboard for access to the video chip area.
The next thing that I would suggest is to visit YouTube, search for "heatgun" or "T41" and review each of the several clips on accomplishing this feat. These clips will show you step by step how to do the actual procedure and will prove to be far better than trying to convey the steps in words.
It's far easier to do than to explain.

I have an IBM ThinkPad T42 and until a few minutes ago my touch pad was working with no problems. I installed a wireless mouse and that works fine. But I cannot control the cursor with the touch pad or red...

Try going to Start>Control Panel>Printer and other Hardware and look for mouse pad or something like that. I think the problem is that you can only use either the mouse pad or the mouse, can't use them both at the same time.
