What is the make and model of the unit ? so little info. but my best guess is the motor, or belt. best probibility is the drive belt is shared by both decks therefore the tape decks woun't engage or move the tape along the tape path. look for broken belt inside or a belt that is slipping. the model # would be helpful to find the part # you need or for that matter the size of the belt ( to order PRB belt equiv.)

Hi,

Most tape problems would be mechanical in nature. I am venturing a guess that the belt(s) are cut. If your brand/model uses two (2) separate motors, then either both belts are cut (unlikely) or the regulator circuitry powering these motor(s) are defective. In some instances, the logic circuitry (especially those with dubbing features) maybe at fault.

Corrective procedures would entail opening the unit for a look and see. This of course would require that you be familiar with electronics circuitry & mechanical components, use of a DVM and possibly even soldering. Should you be uncomfortable going this route, perhaps it will be to your advantage to seek the services of a qualified professional.

Incidentally, should the downtime and cost of repair be no longer economically reasonable, then perhaps purchase of a new unit might have to be considered.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.

Thank you for using FixYa.

The difference between cassette types is the length of the tape and the quality of the tape. Your recorder will work on all types of cassettes.

How do you record on a Lanier p-164

Turn the main power button "on" first, it is located on the skinny side of the recorder opposite of the function knob. Press eject to open the cassette door and install a microcassette tape, with the tape facing the function knob side. close the cassette door and that should load the tape and allow the tape head and pinch roller to move into place for recording or playback. pull the function knob down or push it up to record. If you go into record a red light should come "on" the top, to indicate good batteries and the record function is initiated. After recording pull the function knob all the way down to rewind the recording, when you release the button the unit goes into the play mode automatically. Make sure that the button that reads (off--- vor/fplay) is in the off position.

Tape is not set on record when it is set on record

hi,
it sounds like the tinny switch that detects the "safe" function is broken... normaly it is a little plastic "finger" that is pushed when in safe mode and stays in place when in record mode...

How do I get it to record a voice?

Many portable 'boombox' recorders do not include a microphone for recording ambient sound, but can only record from one internal source to another, like radio or CD to Cassettte. Some do include an input jack for microphones or other audio sources, but you'll need to check your device's specs/ports to be sure.

Recording on tape deck

I have not "solved" the problem. I'm simply assuming that the built-in microphone does not work. I CAN record radio on to a tape and a CD onto a tape. I just cannot record my voice onto a tape. I'm just chalking it up to a faulty microphone.

No, I do not want a plan, thank you.
