Recording DVD's on Samsung DVD-VR320 Recorder

Hi there, we currently have two issues with the above unit.
When trying to record on a DVD that may have other material currently recorded on it, the following message often appears:
"The disc cannot be played or recorded.."
The disc then needs to be reformatted to be able to be used again, thus losing any currently recorded material while its being reformatted. There seems to be no corellation between how many times the disc has been used before and this problem occuring. Quite often the disc is fresh out of the packet and has only been used once!

This is the second issue: When a programme is being instantly recorded (not timer recorded), after the recording is finished or if the recording is stopped, a "System Error" message appears, asking for the player to be turned off and then on again to fix the problem. The recorded material is of course lost when this happens.

The unit was purchased and is used in Australia and is no longer under warranty. We have heard that it may be a problem with the laser and if so, may not be worth fixing at all, dut to cost of parts. Is there any advice you can give?

Different Samsung model, but the same problem: "System Error" is now its default operation when I try to edit recordings, and discs with recorded material on them more often than not are unable to be read or recorded on, according to the screen message. Alternatively, it claims that a disc needs to be formatted when it already has something on it. Sorry, but I have no idea how to resolve this. No more Samsung for me... But can I edit and/or finalize these recordings on another machine or PC?

After spending money having a technician look at the player and then tell us there was nothing wrong with it, he had two suggestions - trying DVD-RAM's instead of DVD-RW's or buying a whole new DVD Recorder. We decided to give the RAM's a go, even though they're much more expensive to buy compared to the RW's, and buying a new machine just wasn't an option, financially. Since then, the player has been working brilliantly, so far so good.

I once did something like this:
On a PC using nero software, 'import' the unfinished session. It should then prompt to 'finalise' that session.

See if a shop will clean the optical assembly for you at a reasonable cost. Also, if you have the "finalization" feature turned off, this will cause a disc to show that message...accordianman

Model number is everything. Samsung mostly supports DVD-R, DVD-RW, and DVD-RAM. Don't confuse this with plus (+) formats, although since @ 2004 other manufacturers are using Sony's multi-format DVD recording format. Are the codes in your user's manual? If not, try downloading a service manual for free from sites like Elektrotanya, Hifimanuals, hifiengine, or eserviceinfo. Then you may determine if you service help.

Can not get the 'Finalize Disc' option on the

Do not worry about no Finalize Disk option. You may have it under another guise.
A recording session can be specofied as open ( Default ), or closed. If closed DATA cannot be appended to the disk.
No matter how many sessions have been written, if the last session is closed no more can be written. Your software automatically finalizes each session, in fact must.

Try cleaning the lens. A commercial lens cleaner should do the job, but if not, contact me again, and I'll try to help you clean it manually

SCREEN SAYS "SAFE" ?DO IDO TO GET RID OF IT???????/

To remove "SAFE" from the front display, using the remote control, press and hold "INFO" for 5 seconds until it disappears. This was probably acitivated while you stopped a recording which can trigger it, of you may have activated "Safe" by pressing the INFO button several times. This is to prevent access of the recorder by locking all controls. This is for the DVD Recorder/VCR combo VR320 and the 1st generation DvD Recorder DVR-130.

Even though this was a product I regret purchasing, it isn't as bad a people make it out to be. It works best with DV cable recording from 1 Hour Mini-DV tape camcorders to 1 Hour XP Record DVD mode. It is probable one of the best. Only issue I have is when you try playing a finalized DVD-R disc in another DVD player, there is a chance it might not work because of the Highest quality 1 Hour record mode. Standard is 2 Hour SP. You will have to burn an exact copy using DVD copy software on your computer to DVD-R. This will fix the problem.
