Both remote and the main unit has a default command mode. and that is command mode 3. if you may have accidentally browsed thru the menu of the dvd/vcr recorder and set the command mode to 1 , that may have caused teh issue. Solution: if you have the supplied remote rmtd224a, just slide the bottom front cover lid. There is a small white sticker on the right bottom corner that you can peel out and you can see mode 1 2 3. slide the switch to the appropriate command mode setting of dvd. Ex: if remote is not working then the unit displays DVD1 when pressing a button, the command mode setting of your dvd player is command mode 1 and thus the switch on the remote should be on mode 1. This should surely help you.
Slide the bottom part of the remote control down. Switch the bottom right button to DVD 1. There might be a white sticker that covers it so remove the sticker first. Then hold down the "Enter" button and the "1" button down at the same time for a few seconds. That should make the remote work again.
Okay this took all day to figure out because I too was stuck in "DVD1" and the remote wouldn't work and there are no controls on the unit itself and don't even get me started on the manual. (Why I didn't start at the back of the book and work forward... I should know it's always on the next to last page!)
Anyway, did you know the "bottom" half of the remote control slides down to reveal other keys? I didn't, but once you "slide" it down at the very bottom right hand corner is a "Command Control Slide" move it over to DVD1 hit "System Menu" and go to settings and reset it to dvd3. (If you want....)
Hold down enter key then the number 1 key at the same time for at least 3 seconds, Now your remote is also set to DVD1 and you can now turn off the recorder. Turn the recorder back on and hit menu and change the recorder back to DVD3 and change your remote back to DVD3 by holding down the enter key then the number 3 key for at least 3 seconds.

If you're seeing on the LCD of the DVD player something like "DVD1" every time you press a button on the remote, try this: Change the command mode of the remote to match the player. Do that by holding down the Enter key on the remote and pressing the respective number. In my example above, hold Enter and press
button 1 to set the command mode of the remote to DVD1. I had this problem and even unplugging the player didn't help, but the above worked for me.
Go to your DVR and manually turn the DVR off. Press the STOP button for two or three seconds. The DVR COMMAND MODE setting will display in the DVR window. (DVD1, DVD2 or DVD3)
Set the remote to the COMMAND MODE setting that was diaplayed by depressing both the remote ENTER key and the desired number key (1, 2 or 3) and holding them both at the same time for 3 seconds.
You can now use the remote to set the DVR to the desired COMMAND MODE. To do this depress SYSTEM MENU on the remote and go to SETTINGS and then COMMAND MODE. Select either DVD1, DVD2 or DVD3. Once you delect a setting that is different from what was set, your remote will stop working again.
Reset your remote to the desired COMMAND MODE by depressing the remote ENTER key and the desired number key (1, 2 or 3) and holding them both at the same time for 3 seconds. The remote should now control the DVR.
Try putting fresh batteries in the remote and then:
1. Push and hold "Enter"
2. Push and hold "1"
Keep them down for about 5 sec.
Your remote is now in mode 1 and will talk to your RDR VX-525.
In the EZ Setup are you can change the unit back to remote command mode 3 if you wish. The remote will stop working again, but you just have to repeat the setps above using button "3" instead of "1".
You might want to reset to factory defaults, but there is an error in the manual. In order to reset to factory defaults, turn on (with no disc inside), DO NOT OPEN THE DISC TRAY, just press the stop button on the player for 5 seconds.
Had the same problem when I changed the factory settings by mistake. There is no "cancel" button in the remote or the set. What worked for me was to follow the directions on P. 22 of the manual and change the remote settings to DVD 1. This is done by holding the "Enter" button and pressing number 1 on the keypad simultaneously for more than 5 seconds. Then, you go back to the "Settings" screen with the "Settings" button, change the control back to DVD 3, and reverse the setting in the remote by pressing "Enter" and the number 3 this time. Remember to hold them down more than 5 seconds. Good luck!
