Question about Casio Exilim EX-Z50 Digital Camera

Casio EX-Z50 digital camera - will not 'start' i.e. lens will not extend

Casio EX-Z50 camera will not turn on - i.e. the lens will not extend - I have very carefully disassembled it (i.e. removed fromt and back metal enclosures) and see no physical damage internally and the 'gear train' for the lens mechanism seems to bi intact and not bound; however, when it is turned on I do hear a moor try to start it seems and a green LED flashes and it beeps - but nothing is displayed - I can push the on button and with the MENU button depressed and the backlight turns on and the display shows VER 1.00 and then it goes away -

Also can't get it to mount under XP from the cradle -

I wan to add that there is a 'possibility' that the camera was exposed to very strongg magnetic field - a rare earth magnet that my son uses in his large salt-water aquarium to move an algae removing magnetic pad on the inside of the aquarium came in contact with the camera when I accidently had it in my pocket and I put the magnet in the same pocket while servicing a pump -

I would like to FLASH the BIOS of the camera if I can to re-instal the software if it is corrupt - although I suppose nothing would show in the display i.e. the MENU button held at turn on and the backlight and VER 1.00 displayed, but it does nothing else and will not mount as a device under XP.

It is such a nice camera I want to get it working if possible - takes great photos - and is a great backup to my Nikon DSLRs

any thoughts?

Oh by the way no damage was done to lens or lens tube - last time it was turned off it withdrew fine and the last photos taken at that time are on the memory card and tehy are fine - so no reason to think physical damage - only thing I do notice is that the rectangular lens opening seems to be 'rotated' ~2 to 3 degrees or so from parallel with the bottom surface of the camera itself - had not noticed if this was always the case - as it is my son's camera - also the protective shutters open easily if spread apart and lens looks normal and intact under these shutters or lens protector leafs.

Thanks hope you can help - also no water or sticky stuff damage, etc. just a normal shut down last time used and then the next time I went to use it it will not turn on - the exposure to the magnet was before the last tiem it was used but I just thought I would mention it just in case it could have caused any proplems -

Is there a 'reset' process I oculd go through?

This just happened to me too. I didn't drop the camera or anything. It's now fully charged, but won't open. I too can see ver.1 when I press menu, but I can't download the photos or see them on the product. I tried fiddling with the lens too. I thought it was stuck, but it now fully closes. It's my birthday this weekend and really wanted to take photos. boo!

What type and size memory card? The EX-Z50 works with MMC and SD cards, 2GB or smaller. It will not work with higher-capacity SDHC cards.

My casio exlim camera lens dropped and now my camera won't turn on nor take pictures

you've got a problem with your camera power management system. if you can open it try to follow where cables nor conductors from battery are going and check them physically.

Lens Error

This is probably THE most common failure among digital cameras. There's a halfway chance of fixing it yourself, described here: http://camerarepair.blogspot.com/2007/12/fixing-lens-error-on-digital-camera.html

Not real sure on that one. Sorry. You can check the casio.com website and see if they are the same size. If they are they might be interchangeable.

Lens issue with my Casio EX-Z50

I don't believe a "lens error" can be fixed at home. That is something that is going to have to be sent in. Sometimes if repairing the camera costs more than what it's worth Casio will offer you a trade up to a different model. Call the repairs dept and ask them about that program. Their number is 800-706-2534 and keep choosing option 1.
