You notice that the copies you print have a dark shadow across the entire page but otherwise seems to print fine.
You have a problem with the toner cartridge.
Toner copier/printers print by transfering toner to a drum using electrostatic electricity and depositing it on the paper. Once on the paper it is set using a heating element or fuser.
Over time the brush which contains the toner in the cartridge and the scraper which scrapes off any excess toner, or toner which is left on the drum, wears and allows extra toner to remain on the drum, which gives the dark shading I mentioned.
To compound the problem these days the cartridges are recycled and obviously at some point the scraper will wear out and you may be the unlucky person who purchased the unit. If that is the case I suggest returning the unit to the store of purchase and exchanging it or getting your money back. Most reputable stores do not have a problem doing this.
New cartridges would run out of toner prior to this problem developing. They have been designed to last slightly longer than the amount of toner which is in them. When recycled and refilled the problems start.
Recycled and refilled cartridges are not always marked as such so there is no way to tell if yours is a recycled unit.
Another problem these days is the drums are being made out of plastic instead of metal. They wear faster and die sooner and cannot be recycled successfully as often. Once they have a scratch they will never print a nice copy again.
If yours is plastic that is probably the problem. No matter which problem you have, worn scraper or plastic worn out toner cartridge, the solution is the same.
You need to purchase and install a new toner cartridge.
If it is only causing an image problem when you copy and not when you print, then there is something wrong with the optics under the glass. Check and see if you have any mirrors out of place or if the scanner looks crooked. If you have the machine set up to scan try and scan to SMB or email to see if it still has the problem. If everything looks correct under the glass and scans to SMB and email look bad like the copies, you may have a bad CCD assembly, or a bad board.
When the print cartridge contacts are dirty and the printer cannot detect/communicate with print cartridge.
Clean the contact points on the cartridges with a dry, lint-free cloth.
1. Open the top cover of the printer.
2. Remove the print cartridges.
3. Clean the copper-colored contact points on the cartridges with a damp, lint-free cloth.
Use a dry, lint-free cloth to remove moisture from the contacts.
5. Insert the cartridges back into the printer.
6. Close the top cover.
7. Try printing again.
If you still cant communicate try with new cartridge .
Dark copies (whole pages) are usually a result of poor charge of the drum. Drum is that green thing (usually, seen blue ones too). You get text and graphics in places, where the drum has been discharged (light discharges drum). So if everything is dark - the drum is discharged fully, or not charged at all. Look for bent, dirty or missing connector plates, springs, paper covering contacts. If you get lines it could also be the fuser (hot thing) - needs replacing. Everything depends on how the copy looks like, I would have to see it. Hope this is helpful somehow ;-)
