Question about Western Digital Caviar WD2500BB 250 GB Hard Drive

1 Answer

Can't connect Hi, I have a WD Caviar WD2500. I do not hear my hard drive spinning i believe. But all of a sudden my PC is not recognizing it or when I go into the control panel, it says that it cannot start the device. I have a lot of music files on here. I have tried uninstalling the device and reinstalling it. I have plugged it in and out, re-booted. Etc. If the device needs replacing thats ok, but I absolutely cannot lose all the information on it. Any thoughts? Someone mentioned on here before about putting the device in a ziploc bag and then putting it in the freezer for a while. I am not sure how I feel about that. By the way, when I plug the device into the PC, the PC DOES recognize that a device is there. It just won't start it and connect to it. HELP!

You may need a new drive. Take it to a data recovery place(Phoe book) and get the musicoff of it, then put it on a new drive.

Can you hear the drive spinning when you connect it to your computer? A spinning sound means your external drive is being powered by the USB from your computer - there are several reasons the drive is not being recognized.
If you are not hearing any spinning sound the drive could be damaged.
Does the drive get recognized by any another computer? If yes - check disk management and see if security is enabled on the drive. Also - check to see if there is a drive letter assigned to your external hard drive.

I BELIEVE THAT WD PROVIDES A CD WITH "WD DATA LIFEGUARD UTILITIES." IF YOU USE THAT DISK AND SELECT "DRIVE TO DRIVE COPY" SELECTION. THIS SHOULD CREATE A CLONE OF YOUR ORIGIONAL DISK. SELECT THE NEW DRIVE TO BOOT FROM EITHER IN BIOS SETTINGS OR FROM THE BOOT SELECT "F12" OPTION.
THE PC SHOULD BOOT FROM THE NEW DRIVE IF SELECTED

Does you drive make any sounds like these? If yes you have a mechanical problem and you should get a specialist to work on it.
If not - try to remove the drive from the enclosure and connect it directly to the computer to recover your files.

If its a hardware problem you can try replacing the logic board. You can get one on ebay or you can get one off of another working hard drive (hard drive must be of the same make/model).
