Question about Pentax Optio 555 Digital Camera

3 Answers

Optio 555 I have Pentax Optio 555 that stopped working when the lens became stuck in the extended position. I turned it on, the lens extended-out, and suddenly the camera was inoperative. Connected to USB to see if PC could override the lack of function but nothing. Can someone provide guidance before I have to break it apart to do internal diagnostics?

I took out the battery, held power button for couple of minutes, reinserted battery, got the Optio screen for 2 seconds, then went to blank. No movement in the lens either.

    Any other suggestions?

It has a fully charged Pentax OEM battery. I have tried the nudging and it didn't seem to work.

According to Pentax, storing the camera lens-down in a warm area for an extended period (a week) can help re-lubricate the retractor drive in cases like this.

This camera seems to have a predisposition to lens retraction problems. Try some gentle nudging, Even a small piece of debris can jam the mechanism, so it might just need a little push or pull.

As for not even turning on anymore- does this camera use a Pentax rechargeable battery, or can it use conventional batteries?

At this point I wonder if the battery has worn out and no longer supplies enough power to the camera? I don't know if you have access to another Pentax camera where you could test the battery? How old is the battery?

The USB cable provides only enough power to run the computer inside the camera, so you can transfer pictures back and forth. I don't think it provides enough power to run the lens retraction motor. So if the battery is dying, it would likely result in the symptoms you are experiencing- the camera turns on for just a few seconds before running out of power, and the lens won't move.

Rechargeable batteries like this one can have a useful life of only 12-18 months, depending on how much it is used.

Hi,

Is the lens totally stuck? Does it even move a little? Did you try to power cycle the camera?

Try taking out the batteries. Hold the power button for a minutes or two. Then leave it like this for a while. This should hard reset the camera.

When the camera is turned on, the lens extends, makes a slight buzzing sound and then retracts and the camera turns off.

Pentax Optio 50 Digital Camera Lens Error

Not really, it sounds like the lens has been bumped while it was extended. Unfortunately, the "buzz" you hear is the gears stripping one another. The only fix is to have the lens assembly replaced, which usually costs upwards of $200. I see this problem at least 3 times a week in my shop.

Pentax Optio 555 LCD screen blank problem

No I don't believe it is your shutter, more than likely it is a LCD Screen problem. I would suggest you take your camera back to the shop where you purchased the camera and have it serviced under warranty. I had a customer with an Optio 550 come in and it looked like every shot was taken through 'venetian blinds' and the problem was with the LCD Screen and the camera was sent back to Pentax and repaired under warranty.
