Question about Uniden GMR1588-2CK (2 Pack) (7 Channels) 2-Way Radio

2 Answers

They are not working

I am trying to communicate with someone who is only 3 miles away but neither of us are receiving any calls. We are both on the same channel, same privacy code, and we are not on scramble. What could be the problem?

A lot of things affect the usable range. The way most manufactures test their products is the best possible conditions. That would be completely clear “line of sight” nothing in between the radios and fresh batteries.

According to the manual best bet would be on channels 15 through 22 and with power boost button you COULD get up to 15 miles, but I would think you should be able to get 3 miles on all channels (assuming that you are not inside buildings).

I would try it without using security codes at all.

Do the radios communicate at closer range?

First,we call this transciever as SRRS (Short Range Radio Service), it can communicate within 500 meters open range or no obstruction, now if the unit can't communicate each other within the range ,i would suggest to sent it to uniden service center......

Can these discovery Expedition two way radios work when you are just three minutes away

They have a maximum range of 3 miles (and this will vary depending on surrounding terrain. They will communicate with each other even if they are side by side, so there is no MINIMUM range to worry about. In a city, I would suggest the maximum range would be more like 1 mile consistently, and 3 miles, possible more, on prairie.

I can't find the manual, and I was wondering how far away you can talk on the BellSouth Walkie Talkies Model 2252?

The range of the BellSouth 2252 will depend on the frequency and the surrounding environment. If you get the FCC license and operate in the GMRS range, then the radios will have a maximum of a 2 mile range. The surroundings will matter: hills, buildings, etc. will shorten the range.

If you are using the FRS frequencies, your range will be significantly shorter (again depending on the surroundings). I'd guess no more than 1/2 mile line of sight.

I hope this helps.

(who uses another brands of two-way radios and the ones with a 5 mile GMRS range work over 1/2-3/4 of a mile depending on hills. The ones with a shorter range can't communicate with someone at the far end of the property. It's about 3/4 mile from the road to the back fence.)

Hi i have the motorola talkabout t500 and they dont work once we get more than 2 blocks away from each other it said that they were good for 5 miles they are both on the same channel

The 5 mile range claimed by the manufacturer might be possible if you were transmitting between two hilltops, with nothing between them except a body of water. The FRS/GMRS frequencies are "line-of-sight," which means that anything directly between the transmitter and the receiver (buildings, trees, cars, even people) can block the signal. Even the so-called 30-mile GMRS sets have an actual effective range of only about 1/2 mile.

Will a repeater be useful in elimating bleed over on a 2 way radio?

If you change to using a repeater your radio would be reprogrammed to different frequencies and move you away from the frequency you were receiving "bleed over" on. When you say "bleed over" you may be talking about hearing other users, or co-channel interference, where someone is on a nearby frequency which causes problems with you communication. Either way, you would be moving away from them.

A repeater is not the only way to move away from this problem. Simply changing your radios' frequency or adding a private line code would do it. If you are needing more range (distance), a repeater would be the answer.

Best regards.

Two motorola t8550's unable to communicate

1) You did not mention the Qt filter. You might check to see if you have the Qt filter set the same on both radios. This is an additional layer of privacy featured on this radio.

2) Verify you have good working batteries. A bad battery or uncharged battery can cause a no transmit situation.

3) If these do not work, reset your radio back to a basic operation by shutting of the code, Qt filter, call tone, weather alert, Vox/iVox, roger beep, etc. At this point your radio would be operating just on a simple frequency. See if you can communicate with all these special features turned off. If so, slowly add back in the features you desire.

4) If your radios still fails to work and is less than one year old, call the 800 number on the pamphlet, have your serial numbers and radios handy. Your radio if not physically or water damaged is possibly still under warranty.

Most of the time when a set of radios has your problem description, it is the Qt filter, or possible improper use of a special feature such as call tones or iVox. These would be the first things to check.

Best regards.

Motorola Talkabout FV700 not transmitting nor receiving

To troubleshoot: Unlock your keypad lock, then reprogram your radios to the following settings. (Check function after each change)
1) Shut off the Interference Eliminator (set to zero).
2) Turn off the Qt filter.
3) Vox setting to off.

By shutting off all the "bells and whistles" of the radio, you will take it back to being just simply on a frequency. If your radios do not communicate with one another then, or with your friend's radios, you have radio which is failing to operate.

If the radios do work in this simple mode. One by one add the special features back until you discover the culprit.

I just bought a motorola em1000r 2-way radio set. Last night they worked, but oly at distances under 2 miles (not 7-20 as advertised). But there was a snow storm. This morning they don't work. Today I am...

You might check your Qt filter setting. Here is a link to the user manual: http://www.giantintl.com/ContentManage/manuals/Moto/EM1000%20User%20Guide%2001-11-08.pdf

These radios have a tendency to remember the last setting they were on, when you turn them on again. As far as range, handheld radios will talk line-of-sight up to 2 miles. Anything you get further is "bonus". Dealers cringe everytime we see an advertising claim of 5 miles or more. Here is a good explanation of range: http://www.hitechwireless.com/understanding-radio-range.htm

If you are unable to get your radios to work correctly, since they are new, I would suggest returning them for another set.
