Exploding stove burner

The coil on one of my stove burners exploded while cooking. It is a very old stove and I don't know if we (tenants) can fix it or if a new stove is recommended. The model is at least 15 to 20 years old.

I had the same thing happen tonight. I was cooking on one of the burners and the heating coil exploded putting a hole through my skillet. Thankfully the fire went out on its own, and I turned off the breaker to the stove, but as I live in an apt I don't know if they will replace it. It's an old GE model from the late 70's/early 80's.

SOURCE: whirlpool electric range burner exploded ''on'' light on always

Hi There,
While the stove is unplugged remove the bad burner from the stove and set the bad burner's control knob to the "OFF" position. Now plug the stove back in. If there is a problem it should trigger the breaker and shut off the stove. If you are not comfortable doing this you might want to ask someone.
The explosion was due to a shorted burner element and once it is removed there shouldn't be any more problems. I hope this was helpful and I hope you get your stove going again.

hi,

sounds like you have the old-style coil elements on you stove.

your problem is the switch under the element, called the infinite switch. i would suggest to have a technician replace it. they usually charge for the labour but if you have never done it before, it's money well spent.

SOURCE: gas stove /electric starter won't click to start cleaned stove

Try cleaning the starter with rubbing alcohol and toothbrush. There might be soap or boiled over residue on the starter. If that doesn't work, try using fine 150 grit sandpaper and gentle clean the starter with it. This problems drove me nuts too. Good luck!

your tenant is probably removing the top burners to clean and everytime you take the burners out the terminal block they plug into gets alittle weaker connection.
you can replace the receptacles and then file or sand the burner terminals.
it is very common and also pretty easy to fix.
you just remove the old receptacle block and the cut the 2 wires, reconnect the new block and wiring and thats about it.

Stove burner gets red hot

Since you do not have a thermostat control on your burners, I would suspect you may have an infinite switch (burner control), that controls that particular burner, possibly starting to go bad. The thermostat control is located on the infinite switch itself and may be cycling on and off improperly. Its hard to tell with intermittent problems, however. If in doubt, you can do a comparison between a working 8" inch burner and the one you are having problems with.

Another thing to consider with these coil type plug in burners, the receptacles under the cook top that they plug into can gradually become loose over time and cause the burners to arc. This may also cause excess current flow through the burner and will eventually cause burner coil damage and/or receptacle failure. I would troubleshoot this by, first, by unplugging the appliance and inspecting all the burner receptacles. If any show signs of burning or melting, replace them. You will need to lift the cook top to access them. Locate the screws under the bottom front edge of the cook top (open the oven door to see them) and remove them. With the screws removed, the cook top will lift up. Prop in place using the hinge supports.

NOTE: Remove the burner coils and bowls before lifting the cook top.

Replacements parts (including burner receptacles) can be purchased at pcappliancerepair.com, appliancepartspro.com, searspartsdirect.com, or repairclinic.com.

If you have any questions, please let me know. I hope this helps you.
