Question about Nikon D40x Digital Camera

Nikon D40X stopped auto-focusing yesterday

HELP! I was taking pictures yesterday when the auto-focus stopped working on my Nikon D40x. I have the 15-55 AF-S Nikkor lens and also the 55-200 lens, and neither will auto-focus.

Through the viewfinder, the normal ISO AUTO [355] display changes to: ISO AUTO [r 15 ] when I push down the shutter release button to attempt auto-focus. If I click the lens A-M button to Manual, the camera works fine. The auto-focus seems to be the only problem.

What do I do? I´ve had the camera less than a year, but was given to me as a gift, so no paperwork or warranty. It has worked perfectly until now.

What I want to know is if there is a user "fix" to this problem (ie. setting, configuration, etc.) or if I have to take the camera to a shop and have it looked at. I live outside the USA, so getting it fixed will be more complicated for me.

Carlos, is your statement about this being an issue with this camera based on this particular instance, or do you have broader information?

Cam-shy, the only message I get on my screen is the one I listed in my original post. I've ***** received the kind of message you refer to.

I have the same issue, it started happening a couple of months ago - 90% of the time auto-focus doesn't work, no beep no power to the lens etc. Everything else is fine - does anyone have a number to call in the UK?

this has happened to me too it has been the third time that the auto-focus has just stopped working and i have have had it fixed each time now my patience is running out. i think its time to get another one. This seems to be the problem with the D40X .!

I had the same problem. My issue was with all my lenses. I solved it by going to the menu and selecting the custom setting menu (pencil icon). Then from the right menu select the AE-L/AF-L and press OK. Then make sure it is set on AE/AF Lock. Presto...all my lenses worked on auto-focus.

I'm using a tamron af28-88mm and get get the auto focus to work with my Nikon D40x

I too have the same auto focus issue. But the problem is intermittent.
Called Nikon today. They suggest:
- call when the camera is acting up
- be ready to give them the serial number

Apparently they are available 24 x 7 and will troubleshoot over the phone...

I have the same problem and I make this: take out the zoom lens from the body and put it again. The auto-focus comes back. Another my solution: Push autofocus buton to M (manual) and back to A (auto). Then sometimes starts again to work autofocus. But still I know it is not final solution...

Adjust view finder focus as you will see setting there, to view correct focus in view finder itself.
Camera is just fine because it is taking good focus pictures.

Automatic focus not working

The D40x only autofocuses with the latest AF-S (and old professional AF-I) lenses. Most traditional (screw-type) AF lenses from 1986 through today will not autofocus on the D40x. If your lens says "AF-S," you're fine.
Most lenses sold today for the D40x are AF-S, and so is the included 18-55mm kit lens. Many non-Nikon lenses from Tamron, Tokina, Quantaray, Sigma and anyone other than Nikon still won't autofocus on the D40x. Try before you buy, but honestly, there isn't much the included 18-55mm lens won't do.
Autofocus systems are fast, but not usually instantaneous. You have to hold the shutter down halfway as you compose the first shot so the AF system can focus and lock, and then the camera fires instantaneously when you press the shutter the rest of the way. See Preventing Shutter Delay for more.

No autofocus

We tried the same lens on another Nikon (D90) and auto focus did not work.
We mounted a new set of lens on the original D40x, and it worked.
Turns out the 2 year Nikon lens (18mm-135mm) was bad. Nikon lens have a 5 year warrantee. The lens will be sent back to Nikon with no service or shipping charge.

Thanks,
K

Sounds like you need to get your camera fixed by Nikon.

However, you say the auto focus stopped working, you didn't switch to a lens that uses a mechanical focus linkage do you? The D40 only supports lenses with AF-S or AF-I type autofocus drives. AF-D and AF-G types without AF-S or AF-I don't autofocus.

Also, check that the A/M switch on the lens is in the correct position.

Manual focusing is quite difficult to do accurately with an AF camera. The screen inside the camera is not optimized for this. If you are sure you are focusing accurately but the pictures you take are still out of focus, the mirror may need adjusting. I can provide further info on this if you require, but if you're within warranty, i'd recommend that route first.
