Me and my friend want to play age of empires 2 on lan but i have xp and he has windows 7 . so whenever i host a game his game doesn't show my map and we cant play. im guessing its got something to do with the difference in the os. can anyone help/

If compatibility mode doesn't work, the game is probably too old to be played on windows 7. You could use an emulation software to run an older windows version and play the game. Otherwise, Space Empires 2 being such an old game won't run on Windows 7. Sorry!
first one of you has to host the game.
goto multiplayer games>LAN/ internet>> depending on if you are playing over the internet or LAN..
then when the options for the game come.. select other players=3
and make player 3 and 4 computor players and put them in team 2, you and your brother select team 1. and make sure to turn on ' lock teams'
when the game starts you and your brother will be one team and the computor player in the ohter team.
my friend when you install the game your installing to a program that is not a stand-alone computer. In order to erase that message, download a crack version of that program. Here's the link Age of Empire 2 just click the download button/.

The error message you got would show up in the following scenarios: 1. DirectX not up-to-date. 2. Video card drivers old. 3. The game being played with a not supported video card.
Check for the above mentioned and it should be either one of them.
