Try to reset the printer using this procedure.. might help. turn off the printer..press/hold the stop/reset button..press/hold power button..while holding power button, release the stop/reset button.. then press the stop/reset button twice..release power button..wait until the power button lights a steady/still green and says "idle"... open the cover...take out both catridges.. then turn off the printer. put back the cover then turn on...now put the catridges back.. and wait for 10 seconds then try to print... try this one.
The printer will still prompt a message of black ink volume unknown and color ink volume unknown..
But at least you will able to use your printer, fax and scanner.
Do this every time you refill the ink of the cartridges.
After the procedure, when the printer registered an error u162, reset the detection for reused cartridge, follow this step:
1. Turn off your printer an turn it on again
2. After the printer initialize try to copy or print. The error will appear.
3. When the error is displayed on the display panel of the printer, Press and Hold the STOP/RESET button and wait until it self restart.
4. Release the STOP/RESET button the the printer is restarting.
5. Wait for a few seconds and the pending print jobs will commence

Does your cimputer, have a command prompt? A device manager? Check the cartriges expiration date, then the printer's software programming system(s)Then get canon on line, and ask them sysemcontrol problem questions about.Periferral devices.
It will never work until you "Reset" it with a "Real" Cartridge. Always use "Real" cartridges save heaps of headaches Penny pinching often cause Dollar sized problems. As you have found out. These days too the cartridges have chips in them too. To stop you reusing them.
