Trying to format a large external USB or Firewire hard drive to the FAT32 file system? Can't do it? Only see an option for formatting the drive using the NTFS file format? Well if you answered yes any of those questions, then you're at the right place.
I was recently trying to format my 1 TB MyBook external hard drive in Windows XP to FAT32 instead of the overly forced-upon NTFS format. Why? Well because I needed to connect it to a NAS device and the NTFS permissions were causing the NAS not to be able to access the drive. Simple solution is to use FAT32, no security, no problems. Though it's sometimes useful to format a USB drive in NTFS format.
Also, formatting a drive in FAT or FAT32 will allow it to be read by other operating systems, such as Mac, Linux, and older versions of Windows such as Windows 98.
Unfortunately, Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 will only format a removable drive in FAT32 if it's less than 32GB! Hmmm...that pretty much cuts out ALL modern external hard drives!
However, Windows can format a drive that is larger than 32GB in FAT32, but you have to use the DOS command prompt. However, if you have a drive that is 1TB or larger, you may still get an error saying "The volume is too big for FAT32".
In that case, you can use a free program called SwissKnife that will allow you to format an external hard drive that is up to 2TB in size. Let's go through both methods. In case you are having problems getting your external hard drive to show up in Windows, read my article on how to change the drive letter for an external drive in Windows.
Format external drive in FAT32 using DOSOpen a command window by going to Start, then Run and typing in CMD.

Now type in the following command at the prompt:

format /FS:FAT32 X:
Replace the letter X with the letter of your external hard drive in Windows. Windows will go ahead and begin formatting the drive in FAT32!

Format external hard drive in FAT32 using SwissKnifeSwissKnife is a nifty little program that is completely free and that you can use to format many types of external drives such as USB, Firewire, PCMIA, SATA and SCSI. You can also use it to create partitions on an external hard drive and it formats faster than Windows.

So next time you want to format a hard drive in FAT32 and Windows only gives you an option for NTFS, make sure to follow one of the two method mentioned above. Enjoy!

How do I format my new Seagate 500GB FreeAgent GoFlex Hard Drive to Fat32 for use with Xbox 360? I am using Windows 7 and when I open up the formatting options only NTFS and exFAT are available.

Windows Disk Management can only format a hard drive less than 32 GB to FAT32. If you want to format your 500GB drive to Fat 32, you need to use third party program like AOMEI Partition Assistant. http://www.disk-partition.com/free-partition-manager.html

Hi, i can't download some files to my transcend elite storejet 500GB, it's says the file is too big, but the file is just 5.49 GB and free space in hard drive is more than 400 GB. what to do?

You drive is formatted for FAT32. What that means is the way data is stored on the hard drive is an older method that does not support files over 4GB. The benefir of FAT32 though is it can be read and written in both Windows and Mac. If you hate mac (as we all do) then screw FAT32. I almost forgot, if you use this hard drive with the xbox 360 do not continue as the xbox 360 for some ******* reason 360s can only read FAT32. The new format we are going to go to is called NTFS (new technology file system) which is made by microsoft, makers of the xbox 360. lol

Anyway first backup everything you have on that disk. Either on a computer or burn it to DVDs cause if you don't you will lose everything.

Plug in the drive, right click on My Computer (or its just "computer" now) click manage. Go to disk management on the left pane. It will take a minute to detect all your drives. You will see your 500gb drive. Double and even triple check it is your transcend drive. Right click it and click format. Change File System to NTFS.

When plugging in to xbox 360. it doesnt recognise the hard drive so i cant play films or music

If you have the latest elements drive, it may be formatted to NTFS. The Xbox 360 cannot read NTFS, so the simple solution would be to format it to FAT32. The problem, would then be that you cannot transfer files larger than 4GB or a folders with more than 1000 files to a FAT32 drive.

Hope this helps

I can't transer file sizes more than 4 GB... What I've done to get around this is save my movies in multiple parts to make each file size smaller. Is there something I need to be able to transfer my files...

This will be a limitation of file size imposed by your operating system and drive format method. For drives formatted under FAT16 (2Gb) or FAT32 (4Gb - 2 bytes). FAT64 allows up to 16Zb while NTFS and NTFS5 both allow any size up to the actual volume capacity so with a 500Gb drive the max would be 500Gb for 1 file. I would therefore suggest that you retrieve all your stored data on the drive and reformat it with NTFS. Then you can have 1 continuous file instead of lots of 4Gb files.

ntfs supports bigger files than fat32. if you want to use the external drive for watching movies on your xbox download a program called tversity from http://tversity.com/ its free and easy to set up and it streams movies over your network to the xbox. ive been using it for a few months now with no problems.

Wd passport will not load to my xbox 360

if it's the drive that comes with the smartware, then it comes pre-formatted NTFS , and your xbox needs FAT32 format to work.

So, you need to connected this drive on a mac computer to format to ms dos FAT32, or use a formatting utility like "partition magic" to format the drive to fat32, then if there's password assigned remove it, and it should work

You need to check that the thumb drive's partition is fat or fat32, if its NTFS you will need to format.

FreeAgent Drive cannot be Modified?

The problem with the compatibility between your external drive and your mac is that freeagent drives are formatted in NTFS and the Mac uses FAT32. Mac's can read from NTFS drives but cannot write to them. I'm afraid that the only solution is to re-format the drive in FAT32 format if you want to be able to write to it.
