  1. Change the BIOS boot order so the CD or DVD drive is listed first. Some computers are already configured this way but many are not.
If the CD or DVD drive is not first in the boot order, your PC will start "normally" (i.e. boot from your hard drive) without even looking at what might be in your disc drive.
Note: After setting your optical drive as the first boot device in BIOS , your computer will check that drive for a bootable CD or DVD each time your computer starts. Leaving your PC configured this way shouldn't cause problems unless you plan on leaving a disc in the drive all the time.
  2. Insert your bootable CD or bootable DVD in your disc drive.
How do you know if a CD or DVD is bootable? The easiest way to find out if a disc is bootable is to insert it in your drive and follow the remainder of these instructions. Most operating system setup CDs and DVDs are bootable, as are many advanced diagnostic tools like the ones I discussed above.
Note: Programs downloadable from the Internet that are intended to be bootable discs are usually made available in ISO format.See How to Burn ISO file in CD for more information.
  3. Restart your computer.
  4. Watch for a Press any key to boot from CD or DVD... message.
When booting to a Windows setup CD/DVD and many other bootable discs, you may be prompted with a message to press a key to boot to the disc. To boot to the CD or DVD, you'll need to press any key on your keyboard (like the space bar) within the few seconds that the message is on the screen.
If you do nothing, your computer will check for boot information on the next boot device in the list in BIOS (see Step 1) which will probably be your hard drive.
Some bootable CDs and DVDs do not prompt for a key press and will start immediately.
  5. Your computer should now boot from the CD or DVD disc.
Note: What happens now depends on what the bootable disc was for. If you're booting to a Windows 7 DVD, the Windows 7 setup program will begin. If you're booting to a Slackware Live CD, the version of the Slackware Linux operating system you've included on the CD will run. You get the idea.
If you tried the above steps but your computer did not boot from the CD or DVD properly, check out some of the tips below.
Tips:
  1. Recheck the boot order in BIOS (Step 1). I've found that the number one reason a bootable disc won't boot is because BIOS is not configured to check the CD/DVD drive first.
  2. Do you have more than one CD or DVD drive? Your computer probably only allows for one of your disc drives to be booted from. Insert the bootable CD or DVD in the other drive and restart your computer.
  3. Clean the CD or DVD. If the disc is old, as are many Windows Setup CDs and DVDs by the time they're needed, clean it. A clean disc could make all the difference.
  4. Burn a new CD/DVD. If the DVD or CD is one you created yourself, like from an ISO file, then burn it again. The disc may have errors on it that reburning could correct. I've had this happen to me more than once.

Hi usavahe.
Booting from CD should be possible.
1) When the laptop first starts to power up, repeatedly press the F12 key. This should bring you to a screen that lets you select the boot device.
2) For the Satellite, it may show icons across the bottom of the screen. You want the one that looks like a CD.
3) It should the start to boot from the Windows CD (if it is indeed a bootable disc) and you will see the message "press any key to boot from cd".
4) Press any key you want on the keyboard and the Windows CD installation process should begin

Hope that helps

Select the first option that says hard drive. If it wont boot from that, the hard drive is missing a key file OR it has failed. You may be able to do a restore or recover process if the drive is ok.

Normally computers today have a recovery partition or a recovery disc. you will need one of these to boot the computer up and recover or repair the computer. most of the time its easier to just pull out the hard drive attach it to a working computer carefully copy the files they want or need and make sure to virus scan them and then just do a fresh install of windows on it with a virus protection program as well.

Hi ethandown,

From my experience, you most likely have a corrupted hard drive which has affected your Windows Installation. Your only option may be to boot from a Windows XP cd.

-When your computer starts, press F2, sometimes delete to enter the system options and change the boot-up priority device to cd/dvd 9(1st).

- Restart the computer putting your windows xp setup cd inside. It will ask you to press a button to run from the cd.

- follow instructions and when on the blue screen, use the repair windows installation.

-if that doesnt work, you may have to reinstall windows however your old files will still be on the hard drive.

Hope this helps,

I get the main acer screen but it wont boot. Just goes to a blank screen with a flashing line in the top left corner, any suggestions?

you possibly have a virus in your boot sector. fi you have access to a different computer with internet you can get a free virus tool from avast to create a boot time scanning disk(dvd) to check and remove. another way is to create a windows 7 recovery disk(dvd/cd) to boot to it and recover your boot sector and rewrite it so the correct boot code. this is done simply by following the startup when booting to the dvd/cd and repair your computer option. another source of your problem could very well be a bad hard drive or loss of data on your drive. i would be able to assist you further with a telephone call if you like you can email me at [email protected]. hope this helps.

Show a blue screen

You need to go into the Setup Utility or BIOS when the computer boots. You need to enable the computer to boot from the CD drive, and set up boot priority with CD Drive first, then Hard Drive HDD.

Then it will boot the disc.

Pavilion ze4600 will not start

The blue screen that you see is what they call "the blue screen of death". The error that you have is Unmountable Boot Volume. This is caused by the operating system not being to load due to hard drive errors. This happens due to the computer being shutdown improperly or hard drive problem. I suggest that you contact the manufacturer of the computer so they can try and restore the computer without formatting or changing the hard drive.

your in windows xp and youre try to install sp3 from a disk i take it.
either the disk is corrupt, missing files or wrong version .causing blue screen.(fatal exception)
you could try leaving the disk in and reboot ...
when in windows select run D: or what ever letter is assigned to cd drive .( start , run , type in d: and enter)
this will show files on cd/dvd. drag and drop the .exe program into a file or on desktop and try to run.if it runs the cd/dvd is the prob (corrupt, virus, missing files.) if it does run its the software incompatable or faulty(incomplete files or wrong version)
either way the cd will be useless.
you can download sp3 (free)as long as you are using a registered os.
