I have been humming along just fine. Now all of a sudden I can't get my wired devices to get a valid IP address and connect with the internet. All of my wireless devices are operating just fine.
I have a Comcast cable modem attached to the latest generation Apple Extreme Base Station (wireless router) connected to an 8-port Netgear switch. I thought I had isolated the problem to the switch and replaced it, but no luck.
I connect the Comcast cable modem to my computer directly via ethernet CAT5 cable... works fine. I connect my computer to the extra port on the back of the Apple Extreme which is then connected to the Comcast Cable modem and everything works fine...
It's only when I try to connect my computer via the switch to the Apple Extreme router connected to the Cable modem that I end up with a bad IP address (169.234.234.324).
Help!
Dear calbearsgo,
Can you make sure your 8-port Netgear switch have no IP or has DHCP Server.
Or did you try to connect your Apple Extreme Base to the Netgear switch using Cross Cable?
I wait for the good news
Hmmm i see, now try connect your desktop to the switch and Comcast modem to other switch port. If this way working, it is should Apple Base Station settings issue.
OK, I think Apple known switch as a PC. Now try setting your desktop IP address manually.
look for the IP address settings on computers that are connected through a wireless router (apple).
IP address -------------
mask------------
Getway-----------
DNS--------------
clone those setting to your Desktop
Dear calbearsgo,
Did you try to reset your apple extreme to factory default?

It sure sounds like the switch is not passing the DCHPDISCOVER packets through to the Apple Extreme.
Is the switch a NetGear Prosafe switch, or a GS608, or a different model?
If it's a managed switch (e.g. ProSafe) then you can connect to the switch's management UI and confirm that the default uplink port is set up for the port that connects to the Apple Extreme, and that it's set to forward DHCPDISCOVER packets to that port
If it's an unmanaged switch like the GS608, then it shouldn't matter which port you connect, but if your model has one port labeled "uplink" then you should be sure to use that port to connect to tha Apple Extreme.
One last thought -- have you replaced the cable that you're using between the switch and the Apple Extreme? You could test the network by first connecting your computer to the Extreme so it gets a valid lease, then unplug it and hook up the full network (computer -> switch -> Extreme) and see if you can still ping the router.
That's a bunch of thoughts, but may not be a solution yet. If these don't address the problem, post back with the model number of your Switch, and I'll go more in-depth.
No, you're right that the GS108 is an unmanaged switch, so there's no UI to be had -- the device doesn't present an IP address like a router.
My only other thought at the moment is that the switch is setting a TimeToLive on the DHCPDISCOVER packets, so the're not getting through the Apple and to the cable modem.
Have you tried setting the network up as:
Cablemodem -> switch -> Apple Extreme
instead of
Cablemodem -> Apple Extreme -> switch

I am working with a NetGear Prosafe switch GS108. Is this a managed switch? I don't think I see any sort of UI to adjust any settings. Also, I am not seeing any specified port to connect to the Airport Extreme so I am just connecting through port 8.
One your last thought -- I did try to replace the cable between the switch and the Apple Extreme after testing that it in fact worked. It didn't make any difference.
Is it possible to set up as a Cablemodem -> switch -> Apple Extreme?
Does the Cablemodem act as a DHCP router for the wired connections through the switch? If so, then by extension it would then give a IP address as well to the Apple Extreme that can be shared wirelessly through the NAT set up?
It didn't work.
Still looking for a solution.
As far as I know it does not have a DHCP server. It is model ProSafe GS108. I did not try a crossover cable to connect my airport extreme to my netgear switch. I have one so I will try it!
I was hoping, but using the crossover cable from the Apple Extreme Base Station router to the Netgear switch didn't result in any connectivity.
So to recap, i have my cable modem connected to my apple base station. That gives me good wireless client connection to my laptop. And if I plug my desktop directly into the other spare port of the Apple Extreme Base station, I get a good IP address on my desktop.
It is only when I try to run my desktop through the switch which is also connected to the Apple base station that I don't get a good IP address for my desktop.
"now try connect your desktop to the switch and Comcast modem to other switch port. If this way working, it is should Apple Base Station settings issue."
I did this and I got a good IP address on my desktop. So it works from my modem to my switch to my computer. There is some issue with the Apple Base station. What do you think it is?
