Magellan 4040 charging issue

Just bought a 4040 (used) that is in excellent shape. I have charged the device over night but it still says that battery is low and goes into sleep mode. How can I tell if its the charger or the battery that is not working properly

when I plug it in there is no indication that it is charging, should there be

  • Rudy615 Feb 24, 2008

went through the manual, nothing in there as far as troubleshooting goes

  • Rudy615 Feb 24, 2008

what I triesd was using the car adapter in my car. I could clearly see that it was charging. I will need to buy a new charger. I believe that will solve mny problem. If not I will be back in touch. Can I get the chargers at a local store or do I have to order on line?

    Thanks, Tom

Hi,

Chances are it's the battery that needs to be replaced.

Installed a new battery in my magellan maestro 4040. battery has been charging for over 12 hours. only 2 bars like original battery.

with the 4040 plugged in to the charger, wiggle the cord to different positions and see if it loses contact (stops charging)

this model has a very common problem with the power port failing..iif it loses contact by testing it in the manner i suggested, it will require either a new one install or at the very least, resoldered,

let me know what you find and ill help you further.

Gps trouble

hi miguel9374,

check and see if its charging. turn on your 4040 and go to the mail menu, the use the arrow on the right and scroll to the next page, then go to the options tab, now the power tab..with the unit hooked up to a known good charger (the car charger should have a green or red light on, if its on, its working) in the power option tab youll see a battery meter, it should be moving left to right if its charging.

if its not, its probably the power port, which is a very common problem with this model and other magellan gps.

let me know if its charging or you might just need a battery, which i can point you to.

Will not charge thru the USB or the car charger. Is the battery replaceable?

a magellan 4040 can not charge through the USB port and if it wont charge with a known good car or home charger, then read below.

This is very common problem with this and many model of magellans.

Try the car charger.

Make sure
green light is on the car charger and let it plugged in for awhile, then hold the power button (up to ten seconds) until it starts..if that fails

I have a Magellan Maestro 4040. It is about 3 years old.

Magellan has to change the batteries But they will probably just sell you a refurbished unit.
BUT if your good you can take the thing apart and try to locate a replacement battery
Three years old? I'd try to find a battery

Which unit did you get last night?

this is a very common problem with these magellan 3140 and also the 3100,2000,2200t,2500,4000,4040 and the 4050 most likely the power port is damaged and needs replaced.i have these power ports but often they just need re soldered..i can repair these magellan gps if you need help. if i cant fix it there is no charge.wmetz@comcast.net ... to open the case on a 4040 you must start on the power button side, otherwise youll break the unit
