Question about Refrigerators

1 Answer

Refrigerator freezes food

We have a Magic Chef refrigerator that is about 15 years old. The refrigerator side is freezing everything. We had a repairman come out yesterday and he told us that we had to freezer control too warm and therefore it was blowing too much cold air into the refrigerator side. I understand the concept of how it works. However, he set the controls to approx. the middle range and said that should work. We put about 1/2 gallon of milk back into the refrigerator to test it and a few hours later it was frozen. We put a thermometer in it and it read 28 after a few hours. We set the freezer control to a higher temp (which should make the refrigerator warmer, right??) No difference, the refrigerator doesn't seem to ever go off. It is constantly running. What else can be wrong with it?

Our Whirlpool refrigerator is about 4 years old and the refrigerator side has started freezing. A brand new gallon of milk is frozen, while some stuff (like tortilla's) in a drawer are not. Both the freezer and refrigerator are on the lowest temperature settings. The water on the door won't even work now.

Sounds like might be a cold control issue, not cyclying on/off. if correct you dairy is good judge, so id assume that your ice cream is FROZEN SOLID. try turning down refrig temp control this will reduse run time(if working at all)

Magic Chef fridge too cold - defrosted it unplugged it - set the control to 1 and it still is freezing things

On the MCBR170 refrigerator the plastic clip the holds the the temperature probe to the bottom of the freezer compartment will break off and allow the probe to hang freely in the back of the fridge. This could be the problem with the refrigerator. I had this problem and used zip ties to hold the probe in the proper position. Magic Chef MCBR445W1 seems like it dosen,t stop

Hello,

Most times this is a bad cold control, but there are other things to check for. Make sure the condenser fan is working and the coils are not covered with dust. A separated heat exchanger ( small capillary tubing soldered to the large suction line ) can separate from one another and make the fridge run too long. - tape tubing back together. A poor working evaporator fan motor could also make the fridge run too long and freeze - replace the fan motor. An inefficient compressor or refrigeration system could make the fridge run too long and freeze - have a service tech check this out. A misaligned control settings, make sure the air damper and cold control have not been bumped and are out of normal settings. Stuck open air diffusers or air dampers are becoming more and more common for allowing too much air to be blown into the fresh food section and freezing things. On all frost free fridge's the freezer temp air is blown into the fresh food section, if you have "easy" to freeze items ( eggs, veggies in water, etc ) in front of or under where the freezer temp air comes out, they could freeze - store them in a different spot. Doors not closing properly making the fridge run too long is something else to check for.

Check on the cold control if faulty, replace the cold control, not having found any other problem, do check on plastic air deflector at the top rear of the frig had been knocked off. replaced it if faulty. As you know, the deflector directs the freezer air toward the front of the frig and the rear of the cold control, which is now functioning properly.
Good luck.......

Fridge keeps on freezing everything inside of it

This refrigerator only has one thermostat located in the fresh food compartment it is designed to activate the sealed system (cooling) until it reaches approximately 37 deg f in the fresh food compartment. The damper controls how fast the cold air can move from the freezer compartment to the fresh food compartment. Allowing you to control the temp in the freezer by controlling the flow of cold air to the thermostat.

You have one of two problems.
#1 your thermostat is no longer opening when it achieves set temp. fix = replace thermostat pn 61005798 $35
#2 your damper arm or assemblie has broken. Fix = Replace damper or broken arm and actuator.
damper assembly pn12001377 $44
damper actuator pn 61002000 $2
damper arm pn 61001999 $2

can you tell me the model # on the fridge please? the motor is running continuously because it's trying to cool the fridge. it may be a few things, the defrost thermostat, the fan motor itself or the compressor.
