A Vista Upgrade from XP could cause problems, and even the one you describe, but not an "update" usually. But then again, if when it shuts itself down, if you have to press the power button twice to get it to start back up, I would say that the processor is overheating (in which case the system does this to keep from frying the CPU). If that's the case, a cleaning of the fan and heat sync could fix the problem. You could also run temperature monitoring software (plenty are available for free trials).
As always more detailed information on this issue you are having would help.
Good luck.

Well both Chrome and open office you can uninstall then reinstall from downloads from the net.

Just make sure you back up your data to a separate medium first.

Take out the battery and leave out for about 30 sec - to 5 min this will reset some settings for you then I would change my power settings where it never sleeps this is a very common problem.

I want you to try something and i swear I have fixed laptops under these same symptoms.

  1. Pull the battery
  2. pull the HDD
  3. Pull the Ram
I want you to blow out all the ports on your laptop including ram slots and where your hard drive plugin. Leave all of this out for at least ten minutes as so the capacitors can discharge the energy that is in them. Sometimes laptops will incur a power spike and will be unable to release the extra energy and the system shuts itself down almost like self preservation. There are no symptoms that lead up to this. Try this and if the above doesn't work try booting with different RAM and so on once you have exhausted all possible culprits then you can say that the motherboard is bad. keep me update

You could have sent a short through the motherboard . Let me know if this helps

For the best cleaning you should take the laptop to a service. If you open by yoursefl and cleanit you have a good chance to not mountit 100% good. Do not try to use a compressor to blow air on the laptop because you can break the coolers
