No modulation lots of signal

Radio was working great i changed antanas and a "freind" said i should tune it up while it was out, so i let him mess with it, now it has great signal on key up butt extreamly weak modulation is there a way i can turn it back up on my own? i dont want to go back to him and hurt his fealings or risk messing something else up.

It sounds to me if im understanding you correctly, that your friend turned up your carrier? correct? and now the radio isnt as loud? If what im saying is right just turn your carrier back down.
Rollins is correct... but seldom do people have o-scopes and internal precision counters and rf probes. depending on what your friend did .. you may or may not have to send this radio to someone that has a working knowledge of alignment of radios. just remember its woth the little bit of money to have someone that "fixes" radios tune your radio. good luck .. It really depends on what he messed with while he was inside the radio. If he accidentally turned down the rf output power, you can use an inline rf meter and then tune L37 and L38 for max rf output.

That is the quick and dirty way to turn it back up. The only other way really to do it is to download the factory service manual, from cbtricks.com, and then re-align the radio by the factory specs, with the proper test equipment.

Working on a 25ltd classic that was wired backwards and wouldn't power up. I changed diode and it lives again. 10 watts output no modulation.

10 watts is illegal. Modulation circuits didn't fare so well. A lot of components fry when you reverse polarity.

How to clip and tune

why do you want to clip and tune a radio? Clipping the diode will make the radio modulate higher and unrestricted but if you take that radio and turn the power down to 2 watts give variable 4 a full turn to the right and open the modulation pot it will sound a whole lot better then if you clipped it. when you clip a radio you create a splash box that wipes out all channels lose by and the others will also be effected. the diode you want to clip is D-11. but I advise you not to.

Meter drops when pushing mic

some one tuned their radio to the wrong side of peak and now you have downward modulation .Try re-tuning it back to to its original settings and if you get it back don't mess with it unless you know what the shell you are doing.

Midland 40 channel 1001 CB radio. I can talk and receive with other units as long as they are close (maybe to 200 meters or so). After the signal gets a bit weaker to where less lights lite up, I can see...

The light you see lighting up dictate how much power you have on transmit (TX) and the strength of your receive (RF) The more lights on transmit the stronger your signal. The more lights lit up on receive dictates how hard they are hitting your radio. Either by power or distance. Is this setup in your car or at you home? Many use a mobile CB in there home off a power supply. Either way I am very concerned about you only getting out a couple blocks. I will help you fix this. First your antenna is a major part of your set up. Spare nothing when buying this. I recommend Wilson 300 or higher for the mobile and IMAX 2000 for home. Some Wilson antennas tune and some don't follow the instructions that come with it and ask me if you are unsure. A good 50ohm coax is necessary too. RG58 or better. For just the CB in the mobile RG58 will do just fine. Now we get to your SWR (Standing Wave Ratio) which deals with return loss and reflection coefficient. To high of an SWR and you will lose a lot of your signal and you can burn up your radio. Your radio does not come with an SWR meter so you will need to purchase an SWR/watt meter and put it inline. The coax from your antenna will run into your meter and then run another coax from your meter to the radio and follow the instructions on how to adjust and check your SWR. So now we are at the point where your set up is properly set up and now to tune that radio up. These radios do not carry much power or have much modulation. The limiter in your CB is what limits the modulation. In your CB there is a pot that will adjust this. Here is what you need to do to get more power and more modulation out of your CB. VR2 is the modulation pot. Adjust this for maximum modulation. Now spread the coils marked LT5/LT12 just a little and spread the coils marked LT7/LT11 a lot. Being a new radio it should not need a receive adjustment at all. Moding the receive includes jumping the PLL and I don't recommend that. You may try to replace that potentiometer but outside of this and the steps above you should have a great CB when completed. Good luck, this should fix your CB set up just fine.

Hi i recently bought a cobra 29 ltd chrome cb radio for my car,i also installed a new antenna ,i have a strong signal, but i am unable to hear conversations because the sound is distorted. It sounds like...

You can't tune the radio. You are supposed to tune the antenna.

I have a page for tuning your antenna. This can cause some distortion, but it shouldn't be that bad. Go here for how to tune your antenna.

also the internal speakers aren't that great. Try an external. I can't just use an internal because an external is so much better.

Something else to consider. There is a lot of skip right now. Skip is when the ionosphere becomes charge by solar flairs, and causes radio signals to skip across it, making them travel hundreds and even thousands of miles. There are some cb operators out there who run a lot of power. 10k watts and up, who just talk skip all day. A lot of those guys sound extremely distorted and over modulated. You may be hearing these guys out there. Its their radio's not your receive.

Also. People who are close to you, may over load the front of the radio in the receive section, which will make it sound distorted.

I have a super star ss148egk built on cobra chasis and cant get any modulation swing. ON am dead key 4 watts no more and would like to be able to get out a little better.

Hi rcstss, I would search youtube for that radio, in searching include the word "Mods", if you feel comfortable opening up the case, make sure you have the proper tools handy. Such as a set of "Plastic Tuneing Tools, also a Watt Meter with SWR, and Modulation on it. Also, a Dummy load for the freguencies that it will cover! You would not like to interfere with your freinds. There are a LOT of Mods for that radio.! Or try and find some shop that you can TRUST! It really sounds like a simple problem to fix, but I'm an Old Ham, and it just second nature to me. And I have more equipment than I really have room for! Good Luck, I bet you will find the answer on youtube though! 73, Collin..

I just purchased a connex 3400hp and my cb freinds tell me that my other radio sounds better than the cx 3400hp,my other radio is a cobra 29 ltd classic.my 29 has more audio and modulation and both radios...

The Cobra 29 has always been a good talking radio and is preferred by truck driver mainly for that reason! The Connex is a great radio in it's own right but sometimes needs a little help. I would suggest a power mic and there are many to choose from but Astatic is a clear winner! My two cents for a suggestion!
