I can hear sound but have no display on my Xbox 360

I can hear sound but have no display. Problem first started as low resolution display after playing for a short time. Now when I turn on the console I get snow then blank display. I've seen posting suggesting excessive heat causing the lead free solder to unseat the x-clamp? How do I fix this problem? Any help is greatly appreciated.

If your Xbox 360 does not have display you need to stop the heat getting to the chips. You can actually do this yourself as many have in this forum using the recommended Xbox 360 Repair guide.

Basically the guide will show you how to stop the heat build up with videos and household items, of course if you are in doubt send it in.

It has a preview video on the website.

Or of course you can send it in to have it fixed.

If you stop the heat getting to the display chips you will be fine!

Try manually choosing lower resolutions in your xbox display settings. My Insignia HDTV does that when switching resolutions like on Hulu in between commercials and then back to the show but only for a second or so. Also does this when going from the loading screens to the game screens for a few seconds when playing the game Split/Second

XBOX 360 Screen Resolution Reset

Due to the fact I change the TV I use my XBOX 360 on sometimes, I find I connect the console and its output is set higher or to an incompatable resolution that my TV can display. If this has happend to you you need to reset the resolution to default, here's how you do it without needing to see the dashboard:

  1. Remove any discs from the disc tray.
  2. Turn the console off.
  3. Using the player 1 controller turn the console on using the big X guide button.
  4. As the console starts, press and hold the Y button and pull the right trigger at the same time. This causes the Xbox Dashboard to reset the display settings to the default settings and then automatically restarts the console.

No video have sound when using component connection on my xbox 360 hdmi ok. help

Your resolution settings on the xbox are too high for your currently used cables or tv. To reset your console's resolution follow these steps: To reset Xbox 360 console display settings
  1. If there is a disc in the console, remove it.
  2. Turn off the console.
  3. Turn on the console by using your controller (its best to have the controller plugged into the console rather than just using the wireless). To do this, press and hold the controller's Xbox Guide button until your console turns on.
  4. While the console is starting, press and hold the Y button and pull the right trigger at the same time. Continue holding the buttons when you see the Xbox 360 logo.
  5. The console will restart and you will see the Xbox 360 logo again.
The console's display settings are now reset to the defaults.

I would try cleaning the connections to the xbox and the TV. Also you could try connecting with a different type of cable (VGA or use the HDMI cable).
If that doesn't clear things up then you could have a hardward problem with your xbox.

Display

To troubleshoot sound without picture issues, follow these steps:
  1. Reset the resolution of the console to 640x480. To do this, start the console, hold both triggers, and then press and hold the Y button as the console starts. For more information about how to reset your display settings, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base: 911059 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/911059/ ) How to reset your Xbox 360 console display settings to the default display settings If you see a picture on the display after you try this step, you can continue to use the 640x480 resolution, or you can try to use a higher resolution setting. If you still cannot see a picture, continue to the next step.
  2. Disconnect the VGA HD cable from the display, and then remove the console power cord from the power outlet.
  3. Wait five seconds.
  4. Reconnect the console power cord to the power outlet, and then turn on the console.
  5. Reconnect the VGA HD cable to the display. If you can see a picture on the display after you try this step, you can continue to use the 640x480 resolution, or you can try to use a higher resolution setting.

I have sound but no video

Hi,

I've seen this symptom before. Try removing the external hard-drive and see if the picture comes back. Another cause could be the video resolution setting. If the Xbox video resolution is set higher than your TV can display you will get a blank picture with sound. Try reducing the Xbox resolution if the hard-drive trick doesn't work.

Also, try to swap the cables. That might help you to find the culprit.

If nothing works, call MICROSOFT to repair the XBOX.

Thanks for using "Fixya".

Xbox 360 display

This is the common "no video" error which usually comes before you get an e74 or 3rrod like 0102. Try the x-clamp fix and stop by our xbox 360 repair forum if you need more help. Good Luck!

Screen won't show up but this is diffrent

This happened to mine and it had to be sent back to be repaired (3rd time) as the graphics card had failed; it started with the display colours looking strange, then the picture went totally. If you can hear everything working (beeping/whooshing" as you go through the "blades", it sounds like you have the same problem. below is how to reset to the default display sttings just in case anything has gone wrong on this.

To reset the display settings of the Xbox 360 console to the default settings, follow these steps: (Copy and pasted from Microsoft support pages)
  1. Remove any discs from the disc tray.
  2. Turn the console off.
  3. Turn the console on.

Note If you are using an Xbox 360 Wireless Controller, turn the console on by using the Xbox Guide button on the controller.

Note Make sure that you use the player 1 controller when you do this. The player 1 controller is the controller where the upper-left quadrant light is on.
  4. As the console starts, press and hold the Y button, and then pull the right trigger at the same time. This causes the Xbox Dashboard to reset the display settings to the default settings and then automatically restarts the console. So it's OK when the Xbox 360 console restarts.

If this doesn't work then try phoning XBOX Support on 0800 587 1102.
