the drivers are installed the speakers are together and pluged into the green hole on the tower .the volume on the line is up to 100% there is no electric plug i didn't set anything in the control panel or properties.

the speaker plug into the back of the towe in the green hole.

that is all there is no place for battery . after trying all that was offered i have a very low sound but the volume is set at 100% and i can hardly hear it.

Although I can hear a muffled sound in the tower, neither speaker has sound...nor even a light indicating the it has power.

I have tried it with the computer, with a tape recorder, and with my iPod. I have plugged and replugged the speakers, and turned and touched the controls. Help! is the whole thing useless?

    1. Are your sound drivers installed?
    2. Are your speakers connected to the Line out?
    3. Do the speakers have a Power, and if so is it plugged in / turned on?

The computer speakers should have some sort of power going to them, whether it being battery powered or plugged into an outlet.

your speakers are not going to work for your computer then. You need to get speakers that have a power wire. The only other thing that you could try is to pull the plug out about half way in the green audio port and see if it gets louder. If it gets loud then you know that your speakers will not work with that computer. If you have an AUX-OUT port on your computer try that. it usually puts out more power than the standard audio ports

I have a similar set of Boston Acoustics speakers, which work fine for my tower.
I find it hard to believe that they would just fail outright, and also that (unless you bought an upgraded sound system) you would have digital-only for your audio.
I would recommend to check the basics first.
  1. Check the speakers on another device. Mp3 player will work fine.
  2. check the sound card on your computer (use a set of headphones or another speaker set).
  3. If you find they weren't plugged in, powered on, etc. resolve that. Usually the power plugs are black, and only fit in one spot. The audio cable to plug into the computer is similar to a headphones jack (3.5mm). On most computers the audio output (speakers) port is colored green.
  4. If none of these get you fixed, go into the control panel and click the sounds icon. From there you can view your volume levels (is the sound muted?), view your playback device (it might have a hardware problem, or be disabled), and test the settings.
  5. If you are still stuck after this please also post your version of windows, and the make/model of your computer. If you know it, the type of audio device you are using would also be helpful. (if it's a Dell standard device or perhaps an upgraded Creative or other brand device + model #)
Thanks for asking, and Good Luck!

Speakers don't work on new computer

its most likely a driver issue make sure that when they get plugged in there is some sort of conformation either on the computer or on the speakers with a light now thats you have ensured they are getting power check both ends of the speaker wire ensure neither the wire or the inputs for the wire are damaged there should be little or no play for the wire to move after being inserted . after ensuring that it not a hardware issue(to really be thorough you could hook them up to another computer and make sure after the moving process they still work) I would suggest going to the HP website and walking through they're troubleshooting mnual if still to no avail and they are under warranty just return them for new ones

Polk speakers with Windows Vista don't work

I doubt the speakers need a driver. Is there output from the soundcard? Connect the speakers to an alternate audio source, such as the headphone jack of a CD player or radio. If the
speakers produce sound, the problem is probably
with your soundcard. Recheck your soundcard
installation and setup procedure. Consult the sound
card’s manual. Check the “mute” and “volume” controls on your
soundcard or media player software and keyboard.
Are the speakers connected properly? Make sure the
plugs are securely connected in the proper location
according to their colorcoding and the diagram on th
front of this manual. Make sure the left speaker wire
with the white stripe is connected to the (+) speaker
terminal on the subwoofer.

Help

check if any other speakers are working
If not try and install the drivers for sound ,if the other speakers work ,try and check the compatibility of the speakers with he new system and windows vista.
The best thing is get in touch with the hardware vendor from whomsoever you bought this and they will let you know about the compatibility and if its the drivers and other support you can visit
