Turn
off the Xbox 360 by pressing the power button on the front of the
console. Afterward, shut off your modem by unplugging its power cord.

Insert
one end of the Ethernet cable into the Ethernet port located at the
back of your Xbox 360 console. After that, insert the other end of the
cable into your modem.

Replug
the power cord into your modem to turn it back on. Once it is active,
press the power button on your Xbox 360 to turn it on.

Navigate
to "My Xbox" then "System Settings." Afterwards, select "Network
Settings" then "Test Xbox LIVE Connection." You will be notified
on-screen if the connection is successful.

you can go to your routers website and enter it manually. Type 192.168.1.1 this might be it or try 192.168.2.1 or 192.168.1.100
when it shows your routers info write it down and then put it in your xbox's network by entering it manually. btw the secondary DNS is just 0.0.0.0 if it doesn't give you two. the gateway is just your routers ip address.
what else you can do is do port forwarding. But the xbox is not a static ip address so it'll change. what you can do is when it says to put your ip address in your xbox put all the numbers the same as the routers ip address BUT DON'T USE THE SAME LAST NUMBER! so like if your routers ip address is 192.168.1.1 you can use 192.168.1.23 i use 192.168.2.15 but you may not have the 2 in yours.
you have to pay for xbox live. If you do not pay for xbox live then you cant get the internet for your xbox 360. Its one thing i hate about having an xbox. Hence the reason for me getting the playstation 3. I hope this has helped.
try starting your xbox up with out the hard drive play a game for a little while. and plug your drive back in. This is a hard drive problem. But remember the xbox has 4 memory chips that keep info even when you shut it off.
