Toshiba TN50X81 Power Issue

Hello,

I recently obtained this TV set from a friend that needed to get rid of it. When I got it, I opened it up, cleaned off the lenses, projection mirror, adjusted the electrical focus and screen settings (the screen setting needed to be adjusted due to a yellow hue on the screen) and optical focus. The display looks great now, but the set seems to have a power issue. It had this before I did the other adjustments.

My friend told me that what I had to do to get the set to come back on after turning it off was to turn it on, wait for the front LED to start blinking red, press the power button repeatedly then unplug the set. You then have to wait 2+ hours for the set to be able to turn back on. Sometimes this works, sometimes it doesn't.

Does anyone know what the problem might be and if it would be possible for me to fix it myself if I can get the parts?

Thanks in advance for responses.

I have a similar problem - the red light begins to blink and the set will not turn on or off - i have to unplug the set then turnit back on and then it seems to work. I called toshiba and they told me it was probably a power supply problem - anyone else experience this? can i buy a power supply? how much? can I fix it myself?

We had this problem too. If finally got to where it wouldnt turn on at all. A service man came out and replaced the power switch. That took care of the problem.

More likely is the set is in shutdown---most common issue on this type of set is the convergence---to know you would have to locate and unsolder both 18 pin convergence chips---with them out of the circuit if the set comes on (will not look good) one of the two chips is shorted--these sets have very good protection circuits to prevent many parts from being destroyed at one time..

These are the chips--STK number is right on the front.

Tn50x81 vertical black lines moving across the screen

If your TV looks 3D, warped, or distorted it likely has a convergenge problem.
If however it just looks dull, washed out, redish, greenish, or blueish or if it looks like objects on the screen have halos the fluid in the lens has soured.
You can search google for parts or you can get the parts with repair instructions from sites such as www.TvRepairKits.com

i have seen before that model have pretty severe cracked solder connections on the power board. otherwise those types of tvs can have convergence failures that will keep the tv from turning on.

Convergence Issue on Toshiba TN50X81 - Service Manual & Parts Source?

Replace the convergence IC's - P/N STK192-110 with part STK192-150 or 180. Then you can go back in and make the detailed convergence settings and get your picture back in alignement. Also check the flame-resistant resistors around the ICs to make sure that none of them have opened up.
