Question about Bose Companion 3 Computer Speakers

Bose Companion 3 control pod issues

I have a Bose Companion 3 series 1 multimedia speaker system that has recently stopped functioning correctly. The control pod is bright red(not amber) when muted and very faint green when unmuted. Sound is stuck at a very low volume and the control pod does not change the volume at all. Also, the tap mute function does not work correctly at all. It will randomly mute if I even get close to it. The volume goes slightly up when I remove the control pod from the woofer unit. I tried hooking an ipod up to the aux jack on the control pod but got nothing. I called Bose and they wanted me to send the whole unit in for their flat rate $79 repair because the csr thought it sounded like a power issue. I think it sounds more like the control pod has died. Any ideas?

Try changing the plug on the control pod, those plugs are fairly weak and prone to breakage. Does there appear to be any strain at all on the plug itself? if so then that is where I would start. If you have a series 2 then I can help you, or if you can find out if the 2 control pods are the same, that would be fine too, but I have a series 2 system companion 3 and if needed I will cut my cable to trace the wiring and then replace your plug for you. my cost for this would be $40, that includes return shipping with priority mail.

This is a common problem it seems with the electronics within the speaker set. (Companion 3 with sub and remote pod, aka, 'puck' = help desk support term)
I bought the multimedia speaker set in 2004 and had it replaced in 2005 because the 'puck' would not turn on (no orange light nor green light.) So I called help desk and they accepted the warranty exchange and I mailed the entire system (speakers and all) back to Bose in Markham, Ontario, Canada and they sent it back several weeks later. It worked 5-6 years after that as it is 2009 now, and it has the same problem again (no light on the puck). So I called help desk again and was ran through the same tests again (on/off, power plug off, various audio inputs, etc.) and the guy said to mail it in and they'd fix it as a non-warranty item. Cost: $85(Cdn) for repair + taxes, and $39 for remote pod.
So the sound that I got to enjoy from the Companion 3 system was amazing but electronic quality is very poor. For a set that cost above most other home user sets at FS and BB, it is substandard longevity.
I like Bose and have no complaints about the sound, but I will not buy another Bose multimedia package because at $350 (in 2004), I would expect it to outlast other sets. My friend bought a Logitech speaker set from another company in 2003 and is laughing at me as he realizes this is my second set and it hasn't even lasted as long as his own set.

For the broken cable, have you tried to fabricate a new cable for it?

check if the volume control needs to be replaced. volume controls gets bad in due time coz of the carbon layer which gets thinner and thinner till it gets cut off

Control pod failure on bose companion speakers , the sound stops


check your wiring connections, sounds like you may have intermittent connection somewhere, and this is the most likely culprit. be certain that all connections are solid. multi pin plugs are notorious for having one bad pin.

Hi, This could just be a sign that your Speaker system is wearing out , and done its due...Also have you had any Power Failures or surge's Lately , if so then it could of damaged the Speakers aswell..

"This device has no output controls" Bose Companion 5 problem!


Metal detectors/ Xray devices have been known to destroy magnet based electronics (speakers). This could be your problem.

The control pod for a 3 piece speaker system's LED light is red. can you tell me what to do to get it green?


Not sure if it can turn to green light necessarily, try connecting a mp3 player to chk for speakers functionability.Is that what u need, its working.

Control Pod for Companion 5 volume control non-functional


I had exact same problem today. I moved my speakers from one room to the next. When I plugged everything back, the mute/unmute worked but the volume control no longer worked.

I got it working now!! I powered down my computer and then unplugged the power to the speaker system. Then plugged in the power to the speaker system again. Powered on computer and all is good again!!
