I'm typing this from my Mac as my cousins laptop Windows XP has a STOP Error: 0x00000024, (Bluescreen), and won't let him start Windows normally, and not even Safe Mode. It came pre-loaded with XP Media Edition, straight from the OEM, and he doesn't have the disk. What can be done? Thanks!

    0x00000024: NTFS_FILE_SYSTEM

A problem occurred within NTFS.SYS, the driver file that allows the
system to read and write to NTFS file system drives. There may be a
physical problem with the disk, or an Interrupt Request Packet (IRP) may
be corrupted. Other common causes include heavy hard drive
fragmentation, heavy file I/O, problems with some types of
drive-mirroring software, or some antivirus software. I recommend attaching the hard drive to a different computer as a secondary drive (so it does not need to boot from the faulty file system) and run ChkDsk or ScanDisk here. If you can, you should back up all user data file, if any, still readable from the drive. If you do not own an XP CD, borrow one from a friend, they do not have any physical copy protection. The key code for installation should be on a sticker on the computer or on a separate cardboard provided by the computer supplier. If there was no such key provided, your copy of Windows may be an illegal copy - contact Microsoft with a proof of purchase and they'll help you out.

Error message stop 0x00000024

which operating system ?

If you get the Windows blue screen, you can determine which stop code you have and determine what you need to do in order to get your computer back to working correctly.

First, make sure that you have this error code - Stop 0x00000024 or NTFS_FILE_SYSTEM. This message shows that a problem occurred within Ntfs.sys, the driver file that allows the system to read and write to NTFS file system drives. One possible problem is a malfunctioning SCSI and Advanced Technology Attachment (ATA) hardware or drivers. This can also adversely affect the system's ability to read and write to disk, causing errors. If the computer is using a SCSI hard drive, check both for cabling and termination problems between the SCSI controller and the disks. You will need to periodically check the Event Viewer for error messages related to SCSI or FASTFAT in the System log. You can also use Autochk in the Application log. Try the following. First, Double-click My Computer, select the hard disk you want to check. Then, on the File menu, click Properties. Then, click the Tools tab. Next, in the Error-checking box, click Check Now.
Finally, in Check disk options, select the scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors check box. You can also select the Automatically fix file system errors check box.

My Dell Inspiron E1405 is getting the blue screen of death before starting up windows xp. It has the stop codes 0x00000024 (0x001902FE, 0xF8C7E4D4, 0x0F8C7E1D0, 0x83622816) it tells me to uninstall any...

STOP 0x00000024, 0X0000024, 0X24 or NTFS_FILE_SYSTEM = this stop error means that your NTFS file system is corrupt and this is practically impossible to fix - absolutely everything on your hard disk is trashed. The only reliable way to fix that is to reinstall Windows.

STOP: 0x00000024 (0x00190203,0x86579268,0xc0000102,0x00000000)

This seems to be a fatal file-system error. More information can be found at the Microsoft Knowledgebase:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/228888

Although it applies to Windows 2000, Windows XP, Vista and 7 have similar architectures and this applies to all of them.

Best of luck.

If you don't have a floppy then you can use

If you want to recover your files before messing with the failed partition then just boot from a Linux Live-CD and move your files on a USB stick.

Bsod, error code:0x00000024, hdd problem booting xp os

Can you do this

Boot from the Windows XP CD.
Watch for a Press any key to boot from CD... message similar to the one shown above.
Press a key to force the computer to boot from the Windows CD. If you do not press a key, your PC will continue to boot to the Windows XP installation that's currently installed on your hard drive. If this happens, simply reboot and try to boot to the Windows XP CD again.
When the Windows XP Professional/Home Setup screen appears, press R to enter Recovery Console
Select your OS and enter password (if needed)
When you reach the command prompt type the following and then press Enter:
expand d:\i386\hal.dl_ c:\windows\system32\hal.dll
Using the expand command as shown above, d represents the drive letter assigned to the optical drive that your Windows XP CD is currently in. While this is most often d, your system could assign a different letter. Also, c:\windows represents the drive and folder that Windows XP is currently installed on. Again, this is most often the case but your system could be different.
If you're prompted to overwrite the file, press Y.
Take out the Windows XP CD, type exit and then press Enter to restart your PC.

Blue Screen Error Message

Looks like you've been getting two different Stop errors...

The 1st error, 0X00000024, aka Stop 0x24, is a Windows 2000 error. (XP is just an updated version of 2000) Microsoft gives an explanation here.

For the 2nd error, starting with 0x000000ED, Microsoft's solution is here, with additional help here.

Try to boot in safe mode. From a cold boot, hit f8 till it gives you several options including "safe mode". Do that and if you can boot to windows let it do it's stuff before restarting normally. Good luck
