Kenwood KDC-519 Faceplate Problem

None of the lights on the faceplate work or light up ...all the functions work properly. I can listen to the radio and CDs, even the faceplate flips over when keyed off.

I seen the post where another individual was having the same problem, and it was suggested to replace the ribbon cable. However, I noticed the other day when I was changing a CD, that when you press the button and the faceplate rotates down in order to insert a CD, all the lights on the face work like they are supposed to, but once you insert a CD and faceplate closes again, all the lights go out on the face.

I've tried pressing the reset button, but the only thing that done was cause me to lose all my settings (bass, treble, radio presets, etc.), and without any lighting on the faceplate, I can't see how to reset any of the settings.

Would this also be a ribbon cable problem, and if so, why will the lights work fine when the faceplate is open, but when closed there's no lights?

Is something shorting out or something?

Any help would be most appreciated!

Thanks!!

After reading over several other posts from individuals that are not only having a similar problem occuring once, but twice; I've decided to purchase a new and entirely different headunit ...one without a flip-over faceplate that is.

    Thanks for the advice!

Detach the faceplate and look at the electrical contacts on the back of it for damage/dirt - you can spray it with electrical contact cleaner. Do the same to the contacts on the head unit - it sounds to me like one or more of them are a bit loose or otherwise not working properly.

Need to get the security code for Kenwood KDC-608OR

ok I just found this info online and they say it came from the service manual for that stereo so I hope it helps:

You will need a Kenwood RC-410 remote control. This remote works on KDC-519, KDC-X859, KDC-319, KDC-4019, KDC-MP919, KDC-X759, KDC-419, KDC-X459, KDC-MPV619, KDC-MPV7019, KDC-2022, KDC-2022V, KRC-435, KRC-535 and KDC-X959

To reset the code do the following:

1) Turn on the car.
2) The faceplate rotates out and the CODE - - - - prompt appears.
3) Press >>' and Auto keys simultaneously on the faceplate and hold for 4 seconds. (If the faceplate rotates back into the console push on the upper left top edge of the faceplate and it will flip back around. Press the Eject button and then try it again.)
4) The screen will still say CODE, but the - - - - will disappear! When this happens press the 5 key on the remote twice and it enters a K on the display on the faceplate. Hit the >>' key on the faceplate.
5) Press the 2 key on the remote three times and it enters a C on the display on the faceplate. Hit the >>' key on the faceplate.
6) Press the 2 key on the remote once and it enters an A on the display on the faceplate. Hit the >>' key on the faceplate.
7) Press the 7 key on the remote twice and it enters an R on the display on the faceplate. Hit the >>' key on the faceplate.
8) The radio goes into All Off mode and you are set! Hit the SRC button on the faceplate to select CD, Radio, etc.

No power to Kenwood KDC-4019 faceplate

It sounds like the stereo does not have the "ACC" voltage. It could have blown a fuse. The "ACC" voltage goes to the red wire on the harness and you get that voltage turned on only when the ignition is turned on in the car.

The symptom of the disc ejecting and nothing else works is an indication that only the constant voltage for the yellow wire is connected. Check the voltage on the red wire with the car turned on, if you have that 12 volts at the red wire, then you need the radio serviced.

It is not very likely that the faceplate has gone bad. Just because the radio will not turn on is not an indication that the faceplate is bad. It could be a voltage regulator in the radio or a circuit trace is blown, or almost anything else. There are many reasons that the radio would have the problems you describe and it can only be found out for certain by troubleshooting the radio on a test bench with the proper tools. If you have a multimeter and a power supply I can guide you thru troubleshooting the radio and even email you the service manual in PDF format if you would like to take a crack at it yourself.

Let me know how you want to proceed.

I found my Kenwood KDC322 faceplate doing the same thing(cutting out) I cleaned the contact points on this 'ribbon' behind the faceplate by rubbing the discoloration off with a pencil eraser. The lights have not cut out again.
