Grinding noise in cartridge for hp laserjet 1200 series printer. I replced cartridge and still hear noise sometime worse and then not so loud.

I have the same problem and I know what is causing my problem. It's not in the cartridge. You're laser scanner is going to go bad. I had the problem 3 months ago. I would only make the grinding noise when it powered up. Printing was okay. I don't use the printer that much. Then about a week ago I notice only the bottom diagnostic light was on. I unplug the power and powered it back up. The grinding noise got louder and wouldn't stop. I unplugged the printer an replugged. Same thing.

I was bored (christmas day) and decided to open my printer to see what the root cause problem was. I removed several screws and once I got all the printer naked (removed all the plastic outside). I plugged it in an tried to listen where the problem was. I notice a vibration at the laser scanner (top black piece). I unplugged the printer. I unplugged the power source to the laser scanner. Replugged the power and saw all the gears move with no noise. Powered off. Replugged laser scanner. Powered on. Noise back. Defective laser scanner. The laser scanner has a ribbon cable, and four purple wires going to it, oh yeah there is a big yellow warning label, so you can't miss it. I hope this helps.

Power recycle the unit. Power it off and unplug it for 30 secs. Then Plug-in back the power. Press and old the on switch and the form advance button at the sametime for 15 secs. Or one of the other buttons. But try each one what you're trying to do is reset the printer back to factory defaults.

maybe it believes it's an alarm clock now, eh?

just kidding...unplug it..let it sit for a few, and try it again..you may have something stuck underneath the mechanism, and it's trying to reset it self.
