Question about Dell (313-1220) CD-RW/DVD-ROM Combo Drive

1 Answer

Dell cd-rw drive doesn't recognize when a disk is in it

When I try to copy a Word file to a CD-RW disk and place a disk in the drive, the drive scanns the disk, then the message comes up "No disk in drive" and will not proceed.

Why doesn't the drive recognize when a disk is in it? If I use it for installilng programs from disk, no problem.

You need to make sure your drive can read CD-RW. That is a different format than "+" and is not recognized in a lot of drives. Also, what software are you using to burn the document?

I have a Dell Dimension C521 computer with a LG DVD drive. Trying to send a file to this drive using either a new writable cd or a cd-rw and I get a message that the cd is full and the file cannot be...

Try to check your cd-rw or cd-r that are new and did not use anymore or maybe it was damage. And maybe the files that you copied are exceed the capacity of the cd-r or cd-rw so that they could not write the files. If your using the Nero Burning ROM you just see the capacity of your cd-r or cd-rw before you going to write it to the cd. Just make sure that the files you want to copy are not exceed the capacity of the cd.

The machine won't recognize the cdrw drive.

First step is to check if your CD-RW drive is being recognized in the System BIOS (basic input/output system).
To do this, look for a hotkey listed on the first screen when you turn the PC on. Usually it's F1, F8, F9, F10, DEL, or ESC.
Once in the BIOS, go to 'System Information' to see your CD-RW drive's make/model.
If you see your Hard Disk there, but not your CD-RW drive, then your CD-RW Drive has probably died.
If you can see your CD-RW Drive there, then you need to restart your Computer with the help of a Bootable XP Disk in DOS mode with CD-ROM support. If your CD-RW drive letter is E (which is normally the case)type the following in DOS Prompt:
e: (hit ENTER)
dir (hit ENTER)

You should be able to see the contents (assuming e: was your CD-RW Drive to begin with)

If you can see the contents or the drive, then restart your PC normally and your CD-RW Drive should should be back on your 'My Computer'

If not, you need to go to FLASH your BIOS. This is how you do it:
Go to your computer manufacturer's website (Dell/HP/LG etc.), Search for downloads section. If you're asked for the model of your computer - right-click on My Computer (on your desktop or in the Start menu). and you will find it.
The BIOS will be an executable file (ending in .exe). There should be instructions on the website on how to install the BIOS. Run the BIOS file by double-clicking on it, the program will take your system down and reboot, installing the newer BIOS version.

Computer does not recognize it as a CD RW drive

When you try to write data to an optical disc, you may experience any of the following symptoms:

* You receive various disc write error messages.
* You experience issues with the drive and the built-in recording feature of Windows XP.
* You experience issues with third-party programs that you use to write data to the disc.
* You cannot read the disc in all versions of Windows.
* You cannot read the disc, or some files on the disk, by using an MP3 player.
* When you add files or folders to a disc that already contains data, some files are lost.
* Recording files to the disc is inconsistent.
* The disc recording operation is consistently unsuccessful.

TROUBLESHOOTING

Troubleshooting specific errors
If you experience one of the following errors, follow the appropriate steps to resolve the error.

* There is no disc in the drive. Please insert a writable CD into drive.
This error can occur if the CD-R drive or CD-RW drive is not recognized as a recordable device. This error can also occur if the device driver has been corrupted. To resolve this issue, see Method 3 in the "General troubleshooting" section and Method 1 in the "Advanced troubleshooting" section.

* Drive not accessible, incorrect function
This error message typically occurs when you try to write to a CD-R or a CD-RW, and the Windows XP built-in disc recording feature does not recognize the CD drive as a recordable drive. This error message may also occur if specific third-party programs are installed. For more information about how to troubleshoot this error,

when you access the CD-ROM drive, the DVD-ROM drive, or the CD-RW drive
* Error Deleting File or Folder.
Cannot delete file name. Files on this CD-ROM drive are read-only. You cannot copy or move files over to this CD-ROM drive.

This error message can occur because individual files cannot be deleted from the CD-RW. You cannot use the CD disc recording feature of Windows XP for random-access storage while you are writing to disc.

To set the service to Automatic, follow these steps:
1. Click Start, click Run, type services.msc /s, and then click OK.
2. Double-click IMAPI CD-Burning COM Service.
3. Under Service Status, click Start.
4. Try to write data to a CD.

I cannot either delete files or format a cd rw disk. Xl files are on the disk

Correct. Copy all the files into a folder on your disk-drive.
Delete the files. Use software (NERO, or ASHAMPOO Burning)
to "erase" the CD-RW disk, and then to write the remaining files back onto the "now-empty" CD-RW disk.

DELL laptop does not read blank DVDs

the combo drive you listed above is a cd-rw/ DVD-ROM....meaning that it will play and burn cd, cd-r, and cd-rw disks. the dvd rom will only be able to play dvd-rom and dvd-r disks providing they are in the proper format. check that the disk in question is not a dvd-rw or (+2) disk. the drive will not recognize that a disk is in the drive if the disk isnt compatable. try a dvd movie, if that works then a dvd-r, if that works then try a dvd-rw +1. if the last option doesnt work then you will have to stick with the dvd-rom and dvd-r, or purchase a dvd-rw drive to install.

GOOD LUCK AND DONT FORGET TO RATE MY POST!! :D

Cannot copy files to DVD disks

First of all you should have the recording tab ON. Have you tried burning using Nero instead of dragging and dropping? This may solve the problem.

However, if you prefer to drag and drop, try setting the write speed to a slower setting, even if the dvd burner has faster write capabilities.

1. I do not think it is a hardware issue.

2. You can try replacing the IDE cable, but if you can read the contents of the disk it does not suggest a communication issue between the drive and mobo.

3. I do not think that the burning software is to blame, when you drag and drop you are actually using a windows based burning software that is installed with the operating system.

4. set up your files to burn through nero, let the software do the work.

I had the same issue with my dvd burner, although slightly different error messages, solved it by using nero instead.
