IBM R32 ultrabay is not recognized

I bought an IBM R32 on eBay and have been happy with it but lately the ultrabay 200 is not recognizing devices. I have an FRU-27L3436 CD-ROM which was installed when I got it but soon the system kept telling me I had unplugged a device without stopping it while I was playing a cd. I replaced it with a 05k9159 DVD drive which came from a working R32 and it does the same thing. Neither is recognized in device manager but when I had to install Windows on a new HDD it was recognized in the player and loaded XP. I also have a LI-Ion battery for the ultralbay which is not recognized-when I install it on a cold swap and try to boot up, the laptop shuts down and reboots normally when I replace the cd or dvd drive in it. I checked the connector and it appears to be tight against the end of the bay. Any ideas?

It did show up fully charged and when I first put it in, it registered as full but then either the bay stopped working or I had another problem.. I feel it has to have something to do with the bay itself as it did not register the cd player or the dvd player but does periodically register and in fact did a play a cd at one point but stopped working and registering. Last night I put in a cd which it read but when I tried to play it, the Media player said it could not play the selected files, then the D:\ icon disappeared. Thanks for the good try though, Poohawk...any other ideas?

Thanks for the idea-I need to get up the nerve to do this one. I think it's kind of wierd though it seems to recognize program disks once in a while and then will play a dvd or cd or at least recognize the drive. For example being able to install Windows XP from that drive when I had to reinstall my OS. I went to the Lenovo site after that and reloaded all the drivers by going through auto update. I then installed Driver Genius Pro and got the few that would not install. I thought that may solve the problem but it didn't.

Did you leave the battery in the R32 for long enough for it to charge up? (Like overnight?) Another thought is that if you bought the battery used, it may not be any good.

OK. My Bad! Misread your first post an was thinking that the CD had started working again after you did the windows reload. Didn't realize that was still part of the problem.
There is not too much to those bays. About the only thing that I can come up with is that one or more of the pins on the bay device connector has come loose from the land patterns on the mother board. This could cause an intermittent problem, like what you are experiencing. And, I would doubt that the ebay seller would bother to mention something like that. That could happen if there has been a lot of device swapping in the past. If you have electronics experience, you may want to try to reflow the solder on those pins.

Yep! The intermittent problems can be a bugger. They can be caused by either programs or mechanical problems. Pretty sure you have a mechanical problem, especially since you have reloaded all of the drivers. The only other thing that I can think of would be if the ultrabay cage itself was loose, or something like that. But I have never seen that happen.

IBM ThinkPad T41 won't recognize USB 2.0 Ports (sees them as USB 1.1)

all available ports are not recognized? have you tried other known good usb devices on those ports?if other devices are recognized then it is an issue with the usb device you were first trying to hook. if not, then it may be the port issue or driver. so update chipset driver for your pc. use ibm's website to check for drivers of your pc.

IBM Thinkpad R32 2658. USB recognizes devices but will not run them. Using a cardbus for now, but need that slot for wireless card soon. Is this a spendy fix?

Have you got SP3 installed from MS, if so what are the USB devices you are trying to run??

Do they have installtion driver disks?? If so you must install them BEFORE plugging the device in.

Do these devices show up in another PC???

IBM THINKPAD R32 Tryin buttons to boot won't work?

Normally when as you bootup press F12 and you get a list of devices that you can select to boot up.
If the doesn't work go into the BIOS setup and go to the boot order configuration and set the CD as the first boot device. Later you can change it back if you wish.

I have a Western Digital Passport that works fine

Western Digital Passports work perfectly on USB ports 2.0 that supplies 5v of electricity with a max of 500mA. If your computer was manufactured more than 5 years ago, it may be using the USB 1.1 which is slower than the current.

IBM thinkpad x31 w/ultrabay 2000 blu-ray drive question

If the bay is a DVD drive Blue Ray will work as long as you have a newer DVD decoding software. There are some decoders or codecs at IBM's support site, such as WinVid. If the codecs at IBM do not work with Blue Ray, then try download.com and search for DVD playing software.

2nd hdd

both hard drives will need to be jumpered to a master and a slave or both have to be jumpered to cable select. normally the jumper setting are either on the label of the drives or are marked on the bottom of the drives near the jumper drives. if the setting are not shown find the drive type, model and capacity then do a google search for the drive "select the factory manufacture link" and search their site for the jumper setting of the type drive you have.

DVD

Hi,
I don't mean to disagree with my associate, but DVD players for R series (or T, A, etc) can be found for less than 20.00 US (Ebay is a good example)
For that matter, we've got at least a dozen at our shop which we sell for 25.00
Installation is very simple as well, just pop the old drive out, put the new drive in.
Good luck
