First question is what colour is the smoke?
Blue and blue/grey is burning engine oil.
Dark (soot) grey/black is excess fuel, incompletely burnt fuel.
White smoke in some cases is a large quantity of unburned fuel but most often is steam from an internal coolant leak.
Large quantities of smoke usually results in the high consumption of either engine oil, fuel or coolant - it has to be put in before it can be converted into smoke. If you supply further details in the comments section we can try to advise you. Petrol or diesel?
If it is black smoke the engine is running too rich. There is too much fuel being sent to the cylinders so it doesn't burn the fuel cleanly. You'll get poor fuel consumption. Check the smoke doesn't have a blue tint to it as that is caused by burning oil.
Karen, the first thing that needs to be checked in your question: Is it burning oil or is it leaking oil. Because both issues will cause the oil level to go down on the dip stick. Find out which is happening through a qualified technician before spending any money on repairs. Please visit my auto-repair-website if you have any other questions: http://www.bigasautorepair.com/
Sound like the oil rings have collapsed. Assuming this is a petrol engine, check your spark plugs for oil and carbon. If they are dirty then you probably need an engine overhaul.
White smoke is usually coolant burning, but you say no loss of coolant, so must be oil burning. PCV is possible fault, especially since you say smoke is intermittent. Part itself should be cheap, less than $20. One your car I believe it is located in a pipe running from intake to valve cover.
white smoke is a water leak on the cyl head , blue smoke is burning oil , black smoke is over fuel or a blokage in air intake or exhaust ! is it smelling ike steam or oil or fuel out of the exhaust ?
black smoke is to much petrol ,check the choke to see if it's sticking if it got one also check air filter to make sure it,s clean. hope this helps other wise take it to a jag expert.
