I am assuming you mean a Dimension 5100 (desktop) and not an Inspiron 55100 (laptop). The Dimension uses SATA drives and as such your second, working system will need an SATA port to connect to. You should take the data cable from the non-working system with the drive since, if there is an extra SATA port on your working system, it will more than likely not have a cable attached to it. Each SATA port only supports the connection of a single drive. There may not be an additional SATA port on the working machine, in which case you're SOL (unless it uses the same HAL as the other, but that's another story).

Hi t rope
It sounds like your hard drive may be faulty, you can try another usb lead to see if this is the problem, otherwise the drive or enclosure may be faulty. Hope this helps.

My external hard drive wont work on my laptop the light comes on so it is powered but i cant locate it anywhere to access it wen i click on the short cut it just says its unavailable

First of all, The shortcut only works if its connected and if its assighned a different port, then it wont work, so just go ahead and delete that for now.

Right click on " My Computer " and select " Manage" When that opens, select " Disk Management " and on the right side it will show all storage devices such as any plugged in pin drives or network drives or external hard drives.

You should see it there and it has a letter attached to it. I.E. C: for your main hard drive, A: for floppy if you have one, D: is normaly the CD Drive.

Depending on what you have or if your on a network, you should see your hard drive, probably as E: or something different.

If you have had alot of different storage devices connected or network drives, it could be that the drive letter its trying to give your Hard drive has already been issued to something else.

on the right, select the external drive ( be sure thats it, dont go changing you C: drive by mistake )

right click and select ( Change Drive letter )

Then change it to something you know isnt in use like Z: or W:

apply, close and windows should recognize the drive and you should have access to it.

If not, come back and we can go from there.

Cannot access hard drive after putting in external box

First, retrace your steps.
Make sure that the hard drive in the ext. casing is set to Drive 0 or master. If it is a Western Digital, take off any jumpers. If it Maxtor or Seagate it needs a jumper on the master pins. The legend on the hard drive will show you where.
Then, make sure that the IDE cable is on correctly. Or like many enclosures, you have to push the hard drive onto the connector.
When you power the unit up, listen to the hard drive and hear if it is spinning up.
Then see if it works.
I would also try a different USB port.
Did the enclosure include an AC power source? If not , the USB may not have enough power to run the unit.
If it still shows as an unknown unit, I would set it up as a secondary internally on your new PC to see if it is in fact the hard drive that is bad.
If I could be of further assistance, let me know. If this helps or solves the issue, please rate it.
Thanks, Joe

Hard drive short-circuit

Try taking the drive out of your computer and placing it in another computer as a "slave". Allow the other computer to boot up and seeif it recognizes your hard drive.

If it does, access your files that you need and copy and paste to an external hard drive till you can replace your computer with a new hard drive. It's worth a try.
